Baton Rouge's runways are significantly longer than Chicago's Midway are surrounded by way less development. Surprised they don't have more issues there.

Flying into MDW is a trip. Step decline, hit it hard, and slam on the brakes.

Those planes don't land every day let alone once a week at BTR.

That's not the point...he said that large planes don't land at BTR, and I simply rebutted that statement by utilizing the Obama visit as an example. If one C-130 that lands once every 5 years out paces the runway and crosses Plank road, chances are some vehicles will get freaking plowed over.

Airport officials said they are conducting a study to determine if the project is feasible, environmentally and economically, but preliminary reports indicate this is the right move for the safety of the airport.

Studies in BR are a fricking gold mine. Prepare for at least a dozen more.

The few hookers the plane will take out are acceptable losses.

The airport just moved Plank Road a few years ago to extend the northeast runway.

Looks like now they want to extended or build a safety feature at the end of the southeast runway.

San Diego airport approach drops in over a parking garage. I think BTR is ok with the current layout.

I am speculating but these regulations that call for "safety" can mean a lot of things. The current runway system has runoff and collapsible paving structures in place to prevent overruns on the current runway. Maybe somebody who knows for sure can chime in but I don't think the current runway is limited to a certain size of aircraft or that any aircraft are being "turned away" from the current configuration.

If I had to guess it is probably some newer, more stringent airport security requirement regarding the proximity of public vehicle traffic in relation to the airfield.

It may just be me, but I thought a plane could crash just about anywhere. I didn't know they were only allowed to do it within a 1/4 of the airport.

Statistically speaking, I believe most incidents occur during takeoff and landing, but I may be wrong...

Houston Hobby and Midway are similar. No roads getting moved there.

How about the north-south runway at MSY? Airline Hwy and vets are right there

If that's really what this is about, then it would be more fiscally responsible to divert traffic on that one day every five years instead of spending millions of dollars to move the road.

I would tell whoever proposed that plan to go fly SWA to Chicago and tour Midway.

A SWA plane ran off the runway at Midway and killed someone in a car on the road next to it. Is that what you are referring to?

Right after the city just paid a shite ton of money to redo the intersection of Plank at Harding as well as putting in new, larger turn lanes in the very section of Plank they are talking about moving

Just take Plank and Harding completely out, make the airport bigger and get some more destinations so I don't have to go to new orleans everytime i fly to somewhere that isn't in Texas.

Seems like they should have done this when they shifted Plank the last time.
