BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Baton Rouge Airport could soon be making changes to a road that runs in close proximity to the end of the runway.

Interim Director of Baton Rouge Airport, Ralph Hennessy, announced the construction plan during the East Baton Rouge Metropolitan Council retreat on February 2.

According to Hennessy, the project would shift Plank Road, near the intersection of Harding Boulevard, a quarter of a mile to the east.

Hennessy said the Federal Aviation Administration recommended that any road that runs through a runway protection zone, be relocated.

“It allows us to comply with the design criteria of the FAA, as well as safety features for passengers that would be on aircraft. Should that aircraft depart the end of that runway, it would not collide with any cars moving through that roadway,” said Hennessy.

Airport officials said they are conducting a study to determine if the project is feasible, environmentally and economically, but preliminary reports indicate this is the right move for the safety of the airport.

Hennessy adds, they will be in the design phase for the next year then construction can begin.

The project is expected to take about two years to complete. The total cost of the project could range between $25-$40 million

Anyone think this is a huge waste of money considering the traffic problems we have in BR? The people running this city aren't the brightest.

Potentially $40M to shift a perfectly fine road over a quarter mile just in case a fricking airplane hits it? We should all just walk around in bubbles.

I would tell whoever proposed that plan to go fly SWA to Chicago and tour Midway.

Part of Plank is already bubbled out. This will move the whole road. This seems like a waste of money, but if the government likely didn't give them a choice. I wonder where that money will come from.

Landed once in BR, shitty conditions. Plan was to circle and see if we could safely land. If not, go to NOLA. Pilot put us down about 1/2 way down the runway. I thought, "We are gonna end up on Plank Rd." We braked very violently. After a safe landing, there was silence...and applause broke out.

What will this mean for the shopping center at Plank and Harding? Wasn't there a very sketchy club there?

The airport just moved Plank Road a few years ago to extend the northeast runway.

Looks like now they want to extended or build a safety feature at the end of the southeast runway.

How is it a "perfectly fine road" if it is within a buffer zone that is at risk for being part of an airplane emergency?

Sure, the risk is likely relatively low. However, I don't think the phrase "perfectly fine" is appropriate.

I don't think BTR is busy enough or having planes big and heavy enough to plow through the end of the runway and make it to Plank Road to smash into cars. This seems like a lot of money for an extremely unlikely and low risk scenario.

Unless BTR is expecting to get busier and to get bigger airplanes. SOUTHWEST????

When Obama brought his shite show down for the floods, I was at BTR when 2 C-130's landed - plus, later Air Force One, a 747, landed - there isn't very many jets larger than those...so I would say that there are planes larger enough landing to reach Plank road.

The few hookers the plane will take out are acceptable losses.

Those planes don't land every day let alone once a week at BTR.

It's been in the airport's master plan for a while, and it apparently needs to happen.

SOUTHWEST

Supposedly sometime in the next year. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Baton Rouge's runways are significantly longer than Chicago's Midway are surrounded by way less development. Surprised they don't have more issues there.

They spend a fortune to keep that airport running where it is.

They are screwed by their location. Railroad on one side. Graveyard on the other. Plank road on another.

It's never going to be much of an airport where it is.

There is a huge noise abatement program that has consumed millions of dollars over the years to seal and air condition old homes in the area that aren't worth the cost of the renovations.

IMHO they should live with what they have and make do. There is an incredible amount of taxpayer money spent to mitigate that poor location. It is not money well spent.
