ACT > GPA hands down for judging how smart someone is or who can get a job done.

I'll disagree. I was ranked top 10 in my graduating class by gpa. I made a 18 on my ACT. In 2003 that was enough to get me tops and into lsu so I never took it again. I graduated in EE with a 3.4 and make 6 figures. I'm 29. Some people just don't do well taking standardized tests. ACT doesn't mean shite in the real world. It's about how hard you work and doing a good job. The valedictorian of my class made a 34 on her ACT, dropped out of engineering after 1 year because it was "too hard".

Made a 17.
Spent a year at BRCC.
Transferred to LSU.
Graduated in 4 years total with 3.2.

I ended up taking it twice to try to improve it for a Naval Academy scholarship. My 2nd attempt was a 27, and didn't get it so I served out my enlistment and enrolled at LSU.
Zero prep taking it, either. I'm sure I could have squeezed another 3-4 points out of it if I spent some prep time.

Just curious, what are the reasons for a 7th grader to take ACT? HS entrance?

Is it just people who don't want to go to good schools take the act?
I only prepped for the sat. Our teachers told us that the act was more for people who want to go to junior colleges or trade schools.

Think it is a east coast v. west coast beef type thing.

I took both FWIW. But this is far from true.

You had ignorant teachers troll. Both tests are accepted at Ivy League schools and everything below. There are regional tendencies but ACT has overtaken the SAT in popularity.
A kid should take them both to see which one they perform better on.

No, it is just the only one required to go to public schools in the southern states. Since that is where the majority of kids around here and the posters on this site went that is what they took.
I think there is a hungover correlation with the ACT, I made my best score when I was hungover and puking in the bathroom during the break. Of course I took it at Madison Parish High School in Tallulah La and the proctors were not monitoring the time. I don't think I went over but when I got up to leave at the end of the exam there were still ppl taking the reading . Also one of the girls behind me raised her hand and asked the proctoe "Mr, teacher ( I don't want to post his name on a message board) can you give this white boy the answer so we hurry up and get out of here."
gotta love that rural NELA public education system

Never took the ACT but took the SAT twice and did not do good either time. Took the National Merits Exam and did good on it.
