How many people take ACT/SAT test prep courses these days? I am sure that is helpful.

Anybody can "experience" it. The test is open to anyone. Just not sure why someone would subject a 7th grader to that.

Guy at my school scored a 31 on it his 10th grade yr... his sister took it as an 8th grader and scored a 28, she took it again in 10th grade and scored a 30.

i sucked at the act, i scored only a 19 in 3 attempts. While i had a 4.0 in high school and graduated in the top 10. Went on to college and graduated there with a 3.7. I just wasnt good at those kinds of test

Just curious, what are the reasons for a 7th grader to take ACT? HS entrance?

Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP). Most of your better 7th graders are going to end up doing it (in the BR area at least). And 16 is on the lower end of what most of them score. Saw quite a few in low 20s.

but won't get many scholarships because he's got a 22 on his ACT. He's studied hard but just can't get it done. He needs a 27 to get the scholarships

there is a HUGE difference in a 22 and 27

a 27 is 87th percentile

a 22 is 62nd percentile

If you do well you are invited to a lot of summer programs through Duke. So it isn't just about taking the ACT at an early age.

Is it just people who don't want to go to good schools take the act?

I only prepped for the sat. Our teachers told us that the act was more for people who want to go to junior colleges or trade schools.

it's regional

and when i took the ACT (late 90s), the SAT was horrible. their verbal section was filled with rote memorization requirements, which is ridiculous if you're trying to use the test to determine academic potential.

I guess I can see this. If you are offered free programs and free Duke education it makes sense.

I say we start a drive to have the OT big talkers retake the ACT and post the actual results on here.

I remember doing very well on the standardized test taken before the Duke test. Teacher asked my parents if I would be interested in taking it. My parents and I said sure. I don't remember any of the dumb kids taking it.

Same.

Made a 25 - not great at all but I achieved every goal that I set for myself. I think I'd be happy to make a 20 now.

What? It's one of the lower scores posted in this thread. imo a great score is over 30

25 is a pretty good score. nothing to turn a nose up at.
