5 Minutes on Florida Ave

On the way back from dinner last night I realized I needed a pack of smokes. I live downtown and was almost home so I decided to stop at the Chevron on Florida. Even though this place is convenient to get to, I typically go to Mathernes or a station on Perkins in the evening because this place is sketchy even during the day.
My laziness won out and against my better judgement I stopped at 7:30 as the sun was going down and in 5 minutes I saw:
1. Yellow eyed crack head ask me for money with some obviously fake story.
2. Cops pull up and detain a different guy, put him against the car and start pulling bag after bag of everything you can imagine from his pants.
3. About 10 other guys at the gas station and a few more camped outside the greyhound station run and scatter when the cops show up to bust that one guy.
4. Driving away I saw another one sitting up on the side of this food mart place across the street light up a crackpipe.
Just another day in NBR I guess. It's a shame too because the ladies that work there are the sweetest gas station workers in this town and the boudin balls are pretty good.

I go to that station all the time during the day... it's usually too busy to be all that sketchy.

Dear Diary, today I stopped in the hood.
It was so scary.

There's a bus station, a detox facility, and a homeless shelter within a 1/2 mile radius of that Chevron. What did you expect.

You should visit the other L.A, i hear the weather on Skid Row is amazing this time of year.

True story:
I was heading down town at lunch Monday and stopped at the MJ Food Mart to grab something quick. I noticed a scrawny dude taking a nap on the side so I grabbed him a Powerade and went to see if he was alive and OK. When I spoke to him he kinda responded by waving me off with his hand but you could see where the needle had just come out of his forearm.
I guess he shot up right there in the daylight, visible from the street. I left him the Powerade and kept going to my destination downtown.
Mrs P told me I should have called an ambulance but I doubt it would have done much good, he was awake sort of and responding so I did what I could.
Pretty sad though.

Quit smoking and you don't have this problem.

Nah, just tired of listening to people like Gary Chambers and that woman running for mayor piss and moan about people not wanting to open businesses in NBR.
Also tired of seeing that shite creep more and more into nice neighborhoods.

exactly. I'd be willing to bet that every town in the south is like this near a bus station.
and OP lives downtown. This shouldn't be new to him.

It isn't limited to Florida Ave anymore.
I was at the Racetrack on Sherwood. There was a car parked at a pump with two obvious methheads inside. The driver steps out of the car, walks towards the front entrance and stops directly infront of the door.
He pulls out his tinfoil meth kit and takes a hit right there in front of the doors. A store employee walks right past him without saying a word...

I couldn't tell you the last time I thought of Florida at 14th as a nice neighborhood. Not to mention, there are businesses that continue to relocate to the east side of downtown.
