David was a zone guy who we tried to make into a shutdown man guy. He also had that MNF game where he had 2 or 3 picks. He was also a really good human being. These things make him infinitely better than browner.

I think a pretty early impression came from game against his former Colts where he got worked over so badly. Dude was a good player with the Colts, like you said, he was a zone only type CB. Would have worked out well playing for a team like the Bucs back then but just not in our man type scheme. Yes, he is a really good guy

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Spiller yet.
Same. He added nothing. Browner was absolutely awful though so he is my vote.

I've gotta go with Byrd. The $$ we paid him for basically getting absolutely nothing out of him was only part of it. We let Jenkins walk after 2013 and I don't think it's a coincidence our defense did a nosedive after that. Its been 3 seasons heading into a 4th since he left were finally recovering from the big gaping whole in the secondary he left. Meanwhile he's tearing it up in Philly.
Jenkins was nowhere near the player here that he is now in Philly.

I'm not gonna lie- I nearly shite my pants when I saw that we had signed Byrd. I think he was only in the league for 4 years but he had racked up 22 picks in that time. That's a crazy stat. Was hoping he would be the new sharper without the rape scandal.
We all saw how it ended up playing out.

Yeah Browner has to be up there for the fact that he actually cost us games.
At least some of the others mentioned rarely or never played. I wish we could be saying that about Browner.
Byrd was bad because of the money invested vs. the return. The first two years were injury plagued and us trying to fit him into a weird position 20-30 yards deep.
His last year he actually played decent in that 20-30 yard deep role so we did get some value for him even if it wasn't what we paid him for.
But injuries are always a hindsight kind of thing and I don't think you can put guys like that too high on the list.
Trying to think of someone worse than Browner because he checks all the boxes:
Sizeable contract
Played a ton
Sucked really bad
Was cut after one year because he was that bad
Bad person (though admittedly it didn't show with us)

Maybe Fleener? He's been productive but compared to the deal we gave him, he's not worth it. He was hyped up big as the second coming of Graham.
.....LOL jk Byrd and Browner by far, frick those guys.

His salary based on average annual compensation is 11th in the league. He didn't really get a very big deal.

I think every coach in the NFL has their fair share of free agent hits and misses

We all loved the Byrd signing at first.

Here are the FA additions since 2014. 2014 & 2015 have to be the worst 2 year stretch of garbage we've ever had... maybe the worst in the history of the NFL. 2016 & 2017 were much better. We've had better overall players, but 2017 has to be some of the best value(production for the salary) we've ever gotten.
2014: Marcus Ball, Jairus Byrd, Jonathan Goodwin, Champ Bailey, Erik Lorig
2015: C.J. Spiller, Brandon Browner, Kyle Wilson, Anthony Spencer, Joe Morgan. We did acquire Delvin Breaux & Snead on league minimum deals though.
2016: James Laurinaitis, Nick Fairley, Craig Robertson, Nathan Stupar, Erik Harris, Josh Scobee, Coby Fleener. Some post-free agency additions: Sterling Moore, Paul Kruger, Darryl Tapp, John Kuhn, & B.W. Webb
2017: Chase Daniel, Ted Ginn, Larry Warford, AJ Klein, Alex Okafor, Adrian Peterson(6th round pick), Manti Te'o, Rafael Bush
In 2013, we signed some decent players, but we massively overpaid them for average production(Lofton, Hawthorne, Bunkley, & Grubbs). Lofton & Grubbs were solid at first, but later fell off as their salary increased.
Combine all this with a horrible 2014 draft class, Colston & Jahri past their prime while making a lot of money, & getting unlucky with Gallette...it's easy to see why we went 7-9 from 2014-2016. 2017 is the 1st year that we seem to have recovered from all those issues(our starting talent needs to improve as a whole, but we have legit depth in 2017). Retaining Brees in 2018 & having another good draft/F.A. period should bode well for us.

I woiluldnt call AP a FA disaster.
Agree. Chalk AP up to Kamara unexpectedly falling to us and being nfl ready so quickly. Otherwise, he's still in black and gold.

That was 2012's FA class, aka the FA from Hell. We also had to resign Brees that year.

All of the contracts were 4 or 5 years and high $. When it didn't pan out, it'd hurt us.
Hawthorne, Lofton, Bunkley, Grubbs iirc

He also tried to get some ither players that would ahve been huge busts but didn't want to come here.
FA hasn't been kind to the saints.
