Hindsight 50/50. Everyone here was fapping when we signed Browner, Byrd and Peterson

Good one. That was a horrible signing. He almost completely didn't make it on the field except for 1 OT play.

Has anyone said Tebucky?

Or did we trade for him?

D'oh...just realized he was before Payton.

Brandon Browner is one of the worst Saints of all-time, and I still think the Byrd signing was worse.

I'd say Browner and resigning of Gallete. Byrd underperformed but we at least got a couple years out of play with him. And while he didn't do anything spectacular he wasn't a weakness on the team , but yea, paid way too much. Jason David was a cover 2 guy who came here and played man coverage, just dumb on our part.

I think he was at least average with us. He babysat some bad CBs while he was here. You never saw QBs look his way much or get beat deep. We are much better off with Williams of course. I agree Byrd didn't earn his paycheck here though.

I think you're only remembering year 3. Years 1 and 2 were a dumpster fire.

Iirc all the ones you mention for 2011 were minimum salaries or close to it though. So nothing that hurts if you miss.

2012 was by far the worst year. We signed Grubbs, Lofton, Hawthorne, and Bunkley all to pretty sizeable contracts (some more than others), and then continued to roll the salary forward on them instead of just cutting bait.

Bunkley was good when healthy, but that wasn't often. Grubbs had one really good year, 2 so so years, and a bad year. Lofton was alright but far from the playmaker he was being bad to be, and was a liability in coverage. Hawthorne had one good stretch (can't even say it was a full year) and some other nice moments but was largely a disappointment.

This FA, along with Bounty Gate that year, is what really set the team back the past few seasons. Add in some subpar drafts over that period and more FA misses in the following years and we should have seen it coming.

Butler and Spencer were cheap contracts.

I'll give you Bailey because I think it cost us $1.5-2 mil and he didn't play. Not a ton of money, but he didn't even stay to mentor anyone.

true. But, did either even see the field in a game? I honestly can't remember if they did.

Butler never played a down. But, Ingram hurt him. I don’t see how that’s on CSP.

Are these Payton or Loomis FA blunders?

Letting Sproles go should be up there. Also Malcom Jenkins.

Was gonna mention him. Not in the same realm as Byrd (due to contract) or Browner (due to being terrible) but still really, really bad. I would put him about the same level as Jason David - they never really fit the defensive scheme.

Not re-signing Sproles and Malcom Jenkins are probably the two non-signing mistakes I can think of. Losing Scott Fujita to the Browns maybe another?

I would put Jairus Byrd in the bad luck signings. It was universally praised as a great signing at the time. It's real easy to look at things in hindsight and say it was a bad move.

Byrd had been the highest rated safety on PFF like two years in a row when we signed him. That deal was universally praised.
