This is not true. Backs like Gale Sayers, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, AP did/have not run behind great offensive lines. Sayers, Payton & Sanders are in the Hall of Fame while AP is headed to Canton. In recent memory, Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson & Brandon Marshall have still managed to produce catching passes from average QBs. Get the frick out with this nonsense.

In a system like Payton's, you don't need 1st round running backs
Without the play of a former 1st round back, the Saints don't get past Philly to make it to the NFCCG in '06.
I guess drafting that guy in the first round was a mistake too.

thank you again for proving my point. Do they give LF7 his yellow jacket on draft day before or after he gets to hold his NFL jersey for the first time?

Saints udfa rb led the way for a super bowl victory in 2009.
Let me know when the last time new England had a 1st round rb. Or outside of Seattle, what team had a top rb in the 1st round and won it all.

Payton didn't draft him, and you can't use a single gameto argue against a decade of evidence.

The NFL isn't the same as it was in 2001

Just watched a recap of the 09 season. We need an explosive back so bad. Not saying draft in the first, but we need someone.

I guess having a future Hall of Famer at QB, the best guard tandem in the NFL at that time & a defense that forced a ridiculous amount of turnovers had nothing to do with winning that Super Bowl. I specifically mentioned that Philly game because it Duece's finest moment. He put the team on his back that day. Its also an example of what a 1st round workhorse back can do in Payton's offense.

Blount wasn't a first round back but he definitely plays like one. Who knows where he would have been drafted had he not punched that Boise St player in the face when he was at Oregon.

This mindset is one of the biggest reasons there are a lack of quality backs in the NFL currently. Its also why so many teams are struggling offensively because they stink at the QB position & have no dependable ground game to rely on.

First off no one said Payton drafted Duece. Secondly, it's meaningless to what I responded to. You said a running back by committee is fine for Payton's offense so I responded by giving an example of what a stud 1st round back can do. Its like some fans are forgetting just how good Duece was or what could have been if he played with a QB the caliber of Brees & a coach like Payton earlier in his career.

No one is saying Fournette is a guarantee for the HOF but you are foolish to think he doesn't possess the talent to do so. Bo Jackson, Marcus Dupree & Hershel Walker are perfect examples of great college backs whose futures in the NFL didn't turn into HOF careers despite the hype & being can't miss prospects.
On the other hand, Barry Sanders & AP are backs whose careers turned out just as many projected them to turn out. You think Fournette is the first back in college to ever have this type of praise & hype around him? Barry Sanders as a freshman backed up Thurman Thomas who was a damn good back & Hall of Famer himself. Before the game against Oklahoma in 1987, Thurman's senior, the Sooners coach Barry Switzer warned his defensive players not to hurt Thomas because there was a freshman named Barry Sanders on the bench who was better. Switzer was right. Sanders smashed all of Thurman's records at Oklahoma St while ultimately winning a Heisman just a few years later. Sanders had ridiculous hype around him that year & going into the draft.
No one can see the future concerning injuries yet talent wise Fournette is up there with some of the greatest backs who have played the game. Just wait until he hits the NFL Combine & puts up ridiculous numbers there. If he attends & is healthy, he will put up mind blowing numbers for a back his size.

Pretty sure he's been cut 2 different times as well. I wouldn't complain about drafting Fournette, but finding a RB with a mid/late round pick or getting one via F.A. after he's been cut is very common. The Chiefs picked up Spencer Ware for free(6th round pick) after he was cut by Seattle.

Ware has also slimmed down after bulking up at LSU. It's given him back the explosion & versatility he showed his freshman year. Whoever told him to bulk, to be a between the tackles running back was an idiot. Just look at the highlights of 2011 Cotton Bowl win against Texas A&M before he bulked up.

Do I agree with you in principal? Absolutely. RB is one of the most disposable positions in the league.
But P&G glasses aside, I really believe LF will be in canton at the end of his career. And a kid from NOLA ending up playing football for the saints is a great story. And having a franchise RB is not a bad thing and a rare commodity.
This in no way makes any sense for the Saints, btw. I don't really know where they start to improve.

I'd rather we take White or Beckwith. Maybe get both

The Saints should draft the best player available. If 2 players are close, then revert to need. If Fournette by some miracle is available I have no issue drafting him. Just please no project picks in the first 3 rounds.

Dumbass
Brees alone will give Fournette 6 or 7 in the box. Also if the pass is working Payton would go to it. Not just slam his running back into the line.
