Holder says that he would hold off any long term extension to Vacarro until after the season to see his potential value and to guage the performance of Bell and Williams

Yeah that's the obvious thing to do, but he played balls out last year before the suspension (statistically his best year overall iirc in his fewest games played).

Unless someone is willing to overpay him we should definitely try to keep him. He plays a different role from Bell and what Williams will play. All 3 can play together just as Byrd, Bell, and Vaccaro did this past season.

Edit:
Unless of course he agrees to a team friendly deal beforehand.

I know that there's more to contracts than $X/yr, but there's no way that I give KV $8m/yr. I would be OK with something like 4/$20m, but that's it. I know that he's versatile, being able to play in the box and adequately defend slot WR's, but I don't think that he's particularly great at anything.

Bell showed some flashes last season. If he improves this year, then that makes KV more expendable.

bruh.. berry just got 13 mil per year and the only thing he has over vaccaro is his nose for the ball. Vaccaro is more sound in other areas. 7-8 mil per year is what hes worth easily.

The cap charge for a franchise safety next year is $12,202,000. Dumb idea to slow roll, IMO. Taking a look at the salaries for 2018, Vacarro is worth between 8-10 mil per year.

He may be worth that much to somebody, but I'm not sure it is the Saints. You don't draft safeties in the second round the last 2 years for them to be back-ups. I know we played three safeties last season out of necessity, but I can't believe that defense is our preference over the long-term. If Williams and Bell look good, I think we let Vaccaro go and spend that money elsewhere.

He's going to be more expensive after this year.

The intrepid reporting being done by the Saints writers the last few days is impressive. Almost makes you miss Kat Terrell. Almost.

If any one knows how to manage our secondary please step forward.

I feel snakebit in who we throw away and who we get of late.

Besides Triplett and Underhill she was by FARRRRRRRRR the third best Saints reporter in recent years.

Holder was good at one point, then he started taking lessons from Jeff.

All 3 are a different kind of safety. All 3 have a purpose. In today's era, you need a rangy, athletic olb who can run sideline to sideline or a safety who can. Our guy is vaccaro.

Vaccaro reallly isn't a safety. He's more of a linebacker, and as someone mentioned elsewhere, he's our best linebacker.

Teams are drafting guys like this because you don't really keep 3-4 linebackers on the field at the same time as much as you did in the past. The league is more geared towards passing and running out of the shotgun formation.

So you need someone like Vaccaro who can hold up against the run as well as coverage a tight end, a running back or a slot receiver. Linebackers in the traditional sense have a hard time doing all of that, and if you have someone who can, they're special and they get paid.

Hybrid box safety/nickel, which is extremely valuable. He can come down and cover the slot on passes or the run on runs, and even blitz from the slot occasionally.

When they went away from that in 2014 he struggled, and they put him back the last two years. He isn't someone that should be used in zones like a safety. He really doesn't play those kinds of roles and he struggled when he did. He needs to be in man and is very effective at that.

We just have had so many problems getting good DBs, and Vacarro is a good one. I think we should definitely extend him.
