Does that ranking system factor in things like a player's age and contract situation or is it a pure ranking of the player's ability?
That's just the PFF performance scoring only.

We need to upgrade the defense in free agency and then draft some defensive players to take their places in a few years. We get immediate help for an aging Brees and our offense and the draftees get a few years to learn our system and get some playing experience.

So I was watching the SF-Seattle game and thinking about Nick Folk being my free agent recommendation for this year. Another that might fit the bill is free agent Steven Hauschka. Good experience with bad weather and pressure situations for a contender. Usually these Super Bowl players get a little too much premium as free agents historically tho. I wouldn't mind seeing a key component for the #1 seed subtracted if the price was reasonable.
Plenty of UFA kickers on the market-
Folk
Hauschka
Phil Dawson niners- another good subtraction
Jay Feely
Rian Lindell
Josh Brown
Graham Gano panthers- ditto competitor subtraction

I think my free agent recommendation for this year is Jeremy Maclin.

If we were to make a few moves in FA I hope it's for Defense in the secondary to be precise. CB, S, or possibly LB (if the right person becomes available). Having an experienced successful DB would help us out much more next season. On offense, we need younger more explosive receivers. We have the "experienced and successful" receivers in Colston and Graham(I know the heat is coming for calling graham a receiver but you can't deny it). All I'm saying is to me, FA will more helpful on Defense than Offense. I think we turn to draft for offense. Not all offense though

I'd love Hauschka, but the dude is most likely going to get some big offers the offseason that I don't think we can match.

Quality or even journeyman CBs usually go for more than the Saints will be able to afford. PRob back. Many have written Greer off. Until he is gone tho ya still gotta count him as an experienced veteran there even if he is no longer the starter. CB looks like a good probability for the #27 pick IMO. Greer gone and I might even go likely.
LB I don't see as a free agent target. Lofton & Hawthorne are entrenched even more by cap obligation than performance. Juneyah has one OLB locked down and our #2 free agent acquisition last winter will be at the other.
Safety is to be seen. Mostly what they decide on Jenkins & Harper. Scenarios where both, neither, or one return are all very possible. That would play into need and how many dollars are available to look at any others. Premier safeties Jairus Byrd, Donte Whitner, & TJ Ward all hit the market. More affordable will be- Chris Clemens, Bernard Pollard, James Ihedigbo, & Mike Mitchell

I wouldn't be mad if we got the kicker from Texas in the 6-7 round. Enough of picking up kickers off the street like John Kasey and Shane Graham and hoping they pan out.

Quickly scanned the six pages and no mention of the hilarity of Zach Strief being #35 on that list? Dude's a backup on half the rosters in the league.

Hmm I wonder if the team might have any interest in bringing Jacoby Jones in. Offensively, he's a one-trick pony, but he's a dynamic return man. Would he be an upgrade over Robert Meachem or Joe Morgan though? Certainly as a returner, but in order to make this team, you have to contribute on more than just ST.
As for safeties, a couple of guys I would take a waiver on are Mike Mitchell and Stevie Brown. Mitchell had a career year playing in Carolina after a really mediocre career up to that point. He turned out to be a solid play maker, nabbing 4 interceptions and forcing 2 fumbles. He also had 4 sacks and 9 PBUs. This is a guy who was supposed to be a liability, but clearly benefited from playing with a talented front 4. He'll likely cost more than Jenkins to re-sign, but I really enjoy the physicality he plays the game with, and it would be nice to steal him from our cash-strapped division rival.
As for Stevie Brown, he's coming off of a torn ACL and a lost season. He came out of nowhere a couple of years ago to pick off 8 passes for the Giants. Who knows what's going on in New York anymore, but they could let him walk away regardless of his asking price. This defense definitely needs a ballhawk in the secondary, and giving Stevie Brown a chance might not be a bad idea.

as long as they dont sign someone who just had a "breakout" year. those guys dogged it for a few years and theyll dog it again when they get a contract.

Jacoby is still drunk in the Pelicans arena

Mitchell was with Oakland his first few years, and his being picked in the 2nd round was a huge head scratcher. IIRC, he had an undrafted grade on him from several scouts. After a few years of improvement and finally getting out of Oakland, he had a solid year.
Stevie Brown just had the light turn on after 2 years, played great in his 3rd, and was out for his 4th.
Not every player is good right off the bat.
Know what I'm saying?

I always like the take a guy away from your competitor angle. Like Mike Mitchell- not only a plus addition but a hit to the panthers. hook that up with this-
Panthers FS Charles Godfrey has a 2014 cap number of $7.1 million.
Godfrey tore his Achilles' tendon in Week 2 and was subsequently placed on injured reserve. Mike Mitchell stepped in at free safety and proceeded to post a career year while picking off four passes. The problem with simply moving on from Godfrey is that he'd leave $5 million in dead money behind and Mitchell is an unrestricted free agent. It's a tricky call for the Panthers, who could end up asking Godfrey to renegotiate.
Mitchell signed away and they've got quite a problem.

Right.
Carolina is worse off in the cap situation than we are, and most fans and writers think that Mitchell will re-sign for cheap. Reworking Godfrey's deal is going to help their cap situation, but it's nowhere near enough to get them below the cap alone. Plus, they've got to re-sign Greg Hardy, Jordan Gross, and Graham Gano, all of whom are considered more pressing.
The Panthers are only going to have peanuts to offer Mitchell, and topping their offer shouldn't be hard

The Panthers could use the franchise tag on Hardy, projected to be around $12 million for defensive ends, or let him leave in free agency. Gettleman said that scenario happens every year around the league.
“Everybody lets players go. There isn’t a team in this league that hasn’t let a big dog walk out the door. And don’t print that I’m saying that he’s going to go,” Gettleman said. “I’m just making a statement. There isn’t anybody that hasn’t done that. It’s a whole big puzzle we’re putting together and he’s one of the pieces.”

It will be nice to watch SF, Sea, & Caro deal with having to pay players. Letting Hardy walk would be a bigger hit than any we have had here (Nicks?)
