Funny story. After we drafted Lattimore my bears fan bro in law texted "nice pick up at 11." I said yeah but was kinda hoping for Jonathan Allen because we need the pass rush. He said "the guy with arthritis in his shoulders? Why?!"

Do you really think there wasn't a spot where we could have upgraded that position?

i mean we did use an early pick on a pass rusher

you just don't like that guy, and no guy player we could have drafted was that much more of a sure thing, because the only elite pass rusher went #1 overall

when you get past burnett and taco there was a big lumping of guys who were about the same, and most of them would be very limited as a fulltime 4-3 DE (they were more 3-4 rush LBs)

I'd swap Rivers for Analzone in a second.

Other than that I thought they played the board right.

Seriously, people need to watch the second half of the Carolina home game to see the issues we had. Doesn't matter what pressure you can get with your front 7 if you have zero trust in your corners at the LoS. They were playing 10 yards off the line and all quick routes

The interior rush alone of a healthy Rankins for a full season (with experience) should help Cam alone. Having someone capable of moderately holding down the right side will greatly improve our rush. And if we can cover man to man, you can generate that via the blitz if need be

Lattimore and Williams in the secondary will make our pass rush better by giving the pass rush a chance to get to QB.

11 and if we traded up from 32.

But a potential shutdown corner fell in our lap at 11, and we didn't want to lose picks trading up (which I might add nearly everyone here complains about; can't have it both ways).

Once you get to 42 none of those guys are clear upgrades over Kikaha and Okafor.

So again, name a player we could have picked?

it's much easier to create pass rush pressure than it is to create coverage

seriously i said this earlier but i'll say it again. if we got this top-shelf RDE, we may have the best DL in the NFL

I would have taken any of the guys that went after Anzalone

Daeshon Hall
Tim Williams
Sack of the MAC
Derek Rivers

I thought they played the board well up until then.

Yup. A third of our sacks came from Fairley and Rankins because the corners and LBs didn't give the line anytime for the outside rush to get home.

So many passes to backs or quick hitters to receivers because we played off. 2014 all over again and why I think Allen is a huge problem. He schemes too safe and let's us get killed short. See Byrd playing 25 yards off (and that's not exaggeration).

can you honestly give a huge difference in these guys and the guy we drafted?

Tim Williams

i wouldn't have hated it, but he'll never be an every down player for us and may peak at like 25% of our defensive snaps

rip on TH, but at least he offers potential as a full time starter at DE

Now can you say for certain they'd be an upgrade?

If you think so you're full of it. There's reasons why these guys "fell" to the third. Maybe a year or two from now they might be better, but right now none of them were going to come in and be clear starter.

And I don't disagree about wanting a pass rusher there. I would have loved Basham. But I'm not foolish enough to think he's clearly better than Kikaha and Okafor.

Jake TBH they should have taken edge guys back to back. I like Hendrickson pick but we need bodies and potential there

Is this really your argument?

How do you know any of our picks are upgrades over what we have?

You go to a different level to be an apologist.

34 to our 30

wanna know what else they were better at:
coverage (70 PD and 13 INTs to 67 PD and 9 INTs)

know where we upgraded or tried to?
Cornerbacks and Linebackers

All BS aside we are all I think surprised at the late round picks on pass rushers. I hope they got this one right.

and Jake, I would take a chance on a guy like this

quote:

In the last dozen drafts, only six top-100 college pass-rushers recorded a 4.61 40 and 6.94 three cone at over 245 pounds.

Von Miller
Vic Beasley
Anthony Barr
DeMarcus Ware
Connor Barwin (2nd)
Cliff Avril (3rd)

Derek Rivers falls into this category.

You add notes like I quoted along with his college production, its worth a shot.

Soph: 17 TFL 14 sacks
Junior: 15.5 TFL 8 sacks
Senior: 19.5 TFL 14 sacks

Re: Tim Williams if he is only a situational pass rusher, great. Good teams(defenses) have guys like that.

Again, Carolina, NE, and Balt drafted 3 of these 4 guys. Notoriously strong defensive teams. Coincidence? prob not
