This is definitely the fault of coaching and not players.

We have 4 players that have come from 4 different teams putting up their worse drtgs or same. Some came from "bad defensive teams" as well, some came from better overall.

Jrue Holiday:
4 years in Phi - 106
2 years in NO - 110

Tyreke Evans:
4 years in Sac - 110
2 years in NO - 110

Omer Asik:
2 years in Chi - 95
2 years in Hou - 103
1 year in NO - 107

Ryan Anderson:
1 year in NJ - 109
3 years in Orl - 104
3 years in NO - 112

Wanna see the guys we lost?
Robin Lopez
4 years in Phx - 109
1 year in NO - 110
2 years in Por - 106

Greivis Vasquez
1 year in Mem - 109
2 years in NO - 110
1/2 year in Sac - 114
1.5 years in Tor - 108

Trevor Ariza
2 years in NO - 103
2 years in Was - 103
1 year in Hou - 101

I like the young vet philosophy, too.

Getting Jrue was a tremendous acquisition, especially on the defensive side.

However, the acquisition for Tyreke and his contract has proven to be a hindrance, IMO.

Vasquez, Lopez -- who were also young vets -- and a first rd pick for Tyreke and Asik? That's a killer.

We went after the wrong guy then and I still feel that way today. Monta Ellis should have been the guy we went after.

Had we went after Ellis, we could have used the money left over to sign a SF.

I just hate how much of a black hole Tyreke can become on offense at times.

It's a fricking crime that our >12 second shot clock play is Tyreke iso.

Anthony Davis is the best big man in the league at taking his man off the dribble. He was on the team when the Evans acquisition was made.

And they just acquired Holiday, who is more than capable.

What does what AD is now have to do with the thought process of adding Evans? What he is now was not what he was his rookie year.

Before the Jrue or Evans trade we had no dribble penetration from our backcourt.

I still don't know what the thought process was. Stupid move then, still a stupid move.

Well, I think the trade was stupid because it was just a sign and trade and I don't think we had to give Sacramento anything because they probably weren't going to match the contract anyway. I don't recall the cap situation back then, but if we had to trade those players we could have done it in a seperate trade(s) and gotten more.

You have to have cap space open to make the offer. That means trading all the same players and not getting significant salary back in return, and then offering Evans and waiting 3 days to see if you get him or if ut blows up in your face and you traded away players for nothing. Sacramento was begging teams to do an S&T. That doesn't mean they wouldn't match if letting him walk for nothing was the alternative. They used Vasquez to help get Gay.

I don't see why Tyreke had a bad contract. Seems to be about market value imo.

The Tyreke project backfired. He was brought in to be instant offense of the bench(i.e. Ginobili). That clearly did not work. Now the problem is Tyreke's game is does not always mesh well with Davis and Holliday. I see to often where Evans plays 1 on 5 on the offensive side of the ball when he should defer to his legit MVP caliber teammate.

Here is Zach Lowe weighing in on the Pels off-season two summers ago.

Rumors were teams were thinking 4/$32M for him. The descending deal is nice. Yet if they outbid everyone by $3M per year, that's not too good.

I look around the league, and right now, it is difficult to find a suitable trade partner for Tyreke.

Maybe there is a GM out there willing to take the chance on Ryno that he becomes the elite shooting PF that he once was, but they have scouts watching games too.

Then there is Gordon, whom I think is untradeable until next season, unless the Pels are taking on a Joe Johnson-esque contract.

At the end of the year, they are going to have to extend Asik. What's that going to cost? $28 over 3?

No talented youngster with some upside that could potentially reach his ceiling in another system. No first round pick in 2015.

I think the Pelicans are in NBA purgatory, stuck in that 9-12 range in the West.

With another coach we can actually put these guys in better position to maximise their potential.

We can get a talented youngster if we play our cards right(like getting a late 1st or flipping one of those guys).

I'm not ready to bury the pels in NBA puragtory yet.

Thanks for doing the leg work. I think it's often forgotten how frustrating it was to watch the Lopez/Vasquez combo play in Monty's "defense". It was a nightly ritual bitching about them being too slow to contain anyone. At the time, these weren't viewed as major pieces and likely still wouldn't be. Hindsight is 20/20, and it's both frustrating and refreshing to see Monty run out of excuses. The numbers and metrics are catching up to him when people like htran dig and look.

1) Lopez is soft, slow, and misses 20-30 games a year
2) Vasquez is not a good PG. There's about 60 dudes in the NBA better than him.
3) Evans can drop 30 any given night.
