So, what was the thought process behind the Tyreke trade again?

Someone help me out and refresh my memory.
It was a signing basically. But the pieces the Pelicans had to give up was way too much.
Trade Vasquez and a competent big (Lopez) -- both of which were on great contracts at the time -- for Tyreke.
Now, I do like Tyreke and his ability to bulldog his way to the paint, creating space and finishing.

Simmons and Lowe on their last podcast insinuated that the move was made to appease Tyreke's agent, who also represents Davis.
Surely, this cannot be the case, can it?

Solid combo guard that can replace EG if he were to go down/be traded.
Asset that can be traded to get another player if his number stayed high and EG could be healthy.
Losing Lopez was stupid as hell though, he was a solid center that had offensive limitations. If we had kept him, we'd have been in solid shape to get a SF right now and a 3pt specialist SG.

In addition to thinking Gordon would be moved by now, an unwanted RFA actually isn't a bad way to get talent at a decent price. That's how we got Ryno, and Greg Monroe is another example. I'm a little surprised we didn't see a S&T for him. I also think they thought Lopez wasn't a long term solution. His weakness were magnified by playing with Vasquez, but if you can't defend the Pick and Roll in a league that does nothing but run Pick and Rolls, it's easy to understand why they thought Lopez was expendable. Even if we could undo the Tyreke trade I think I still do the Asik trade and move RoLo for something else when it happens.

AD has no leverage on a contract for over 6-7 years at the point this took place. Who says he's got the same agent in 2021? That's outlandish even for a conspiracy theory.Posted on 12/27/14 at 4:59 pm to htran90

makes free throws, which is fricking huge.
Also, better offensively than Asik. Can finish with running hooks and makes set shots.

At the time, Lopez wasn't seen as a long term answer. They were cashing in when his and Vasquez's value were highest. Even when it happened, people were unsure of the fit among Evans, Holiday, and Gordon.
Hindsight has made moving Lopez look like a miscalculation. They would have had about $6-7M to play with (remember Steimsma and his $2.5M salary wouldn't have been necessary), no log jam in the backcourt, a young center (corporate knowledge?), and flexibility to move assets (2015 first, Vasquez or even Lopez again) for wing help.

how is it "cashing in" on value when you are giving a contract to a player that nobody else in the league would have been willing to give?

The problem there is more on the hard hedging than Lopez. Lopez started for a league average ddefense last year and a top 5 ome this year.
In NO, we haven't seen much of an overall improvement on defense (yet) from Vasquez and Lopez to Holiday and Asik.

We had no one on the team before Evans came that could take his man off the dribble and score. Our entire offense was jump shooting.

Anthony Davis is the best big man in the league at taking his man off the dribble. He was on the team when the Evans acquisition was made.
And they just acquired Holiday, who is more than capable.

We saw it plenty in college. Him catching the ball at 16-feet and getting to the basket.
*Obligatory* remember, he was a guard his junior year in high school.

Yep. Davis was projecting as a long term project. He shot like 28% from mid range his rookie year.
You saw his offense blooming early though and called for it.

I think the thought process was this is better talent now than we could get if we wait out Gordon's contract. Demps obviously misjudged his ability to trade Gordon, but how does the short term signing of older vets like Al Jefferson or Paul Millsap, the other likely course of action, help build the team? All that does is make you have to rebuild from scratch once Gordon is off the books. I like the young vet strategy, and honestly I think we'd be seeing better results with a better coach. If I had a nickel for every time someone posted "stagger" this season
