He hit the jackpot and lucked into a franchise saving trade. I still think he's pretty terrible

most, if not all GMs would have done that trade given the assets required to give up for Cousins AND Casspi

Well the guess what?

Demps was the GM that got it done! So it doesn't matter if everyone else would have made that same decision if presented, but he sought it out and made it happen. He also drafted the guy that someone else in the league thought was the next Curry.

He won a potential franchise saving trade. Regardless of the factors, he pulled it off and should be given credit. He's also done an above average job at finding role guys. With that being said, he also bid against himself to sign Asik on a horrible deal, let a bargain player at a need position (James Ennis) walk, followed that up by overpaying for Solomon Hill, and now has a collection of big men that he cant give away. It isn't his fault that his young vet experiment never had a chance because of injury, but all the bad contracts are solely on him. To me this trade is just enough to buy him some time, and I'm rooting for him to pull it off.

He was royally screwing us into mediocrity while trying to save his job. Then lucked into one of the more lopsided trades in recent memory for an all star who can possibly take us out of mediocrity.

So he may have helped turn this around, but he was more so in the right place at the right time imo. With that said, Kudos to him for taking advantage and any part he played in convincing Vlade into this deal.

I still don't trust him. But this move really aligned Demps' plan with ours as fans (I'm assuming most here were on the tank bandwagon before this deal). So I'm not necessarily looking for him to be fired anymore. Besides, that'd just cause too much instability at a delicate time in our franchise (2 of our 3 stars are on the hook for a new contract within the next couple of seasons)

Let us remember that had Philly taken Demps deal, no one would be happy with Dell right now

Hell, I think Brooklyn turned us down as well.

Exactly, the fact that he was trying to get okafor shows how dangerous he is to this team when he's desperate.

Thankfully, he hesitated on okafor and this came up

yup...philly turned down our offers for okafor and Brooklyn wanted the 2019 pick as well

we got VERY lucky those two were playing hard ball or we'd be talking about how AD is going to leave instead of what could happen if we make the playoffs and beyond.

a monkey could have pulled that trade off.

all the big moves he has made have pretty much sucked or caused us to just tread water. We've wasted 4 years with Anthony Davis that we wont get back

1st RD pick and 5yr $58 mil

oh yeah, and

How good could this team be if that money was invested elsewhere?

Who became that 1st rounder we traded for Asik? Was it Sam Dekker?

Yeah he's still below average. But he will get another year or 2 because of this trade

Asik seems like the really egregious bad decision. He has been pretty garbage since he has been here, and watching him try to play offense has always been pretty painful. Then he got extended for a pretty big contract. It seems like some of the other moves that wound up being bad in hindsight were a little more justifiable at the time.

I aint even that mad at the initial move to get Asik. But when you saw how it was going it seems like he extended him to justify the initial move. I will never understand the extension.

I am as happy as anyone that Demps was able to pull of the Cousins trade. However, I just don't agree with his team building philosophy. His entire plan was to get young-veteran, which is what resulted in Evans, Holiday, and I guess you could throw in Asik in that category. The problem is that he dried up his draft picks, which would have translated into cheap contracts, and traded those in so he could pay a "young veteran" their first big pay day. It's not encouraging when you've traded away picks in the '13,'14,'15 drafts instead of waiting it out and drafting players. He's damn lucky he got Cousins, but if it weren't for Vlade's negligence, we would still be calling for him to be fired. That being said, I will say Demps has a knack for finding players on bargain deals and has been able to hit on small trades like the Qpon and Norris cole trades.

And none of that matters anymore. The core pieces are in place. We can't rip on Demps for letting the past/sunk cost make his present decisions worse and then judge him solely based on past decisions we didn't like. The question is where do we go from here?

The remaining work filling out the roster seems to be the type of thing he's good at. Also with where the roster and cap is at, trading yet another pick for a young vet, staying over the cap, and keeping the MLE makes a lot of sense, probably more sense than other paths.

The point I see as his next big challenge that he may not be the right GM for is what to do if Gentry can't figure out how to make this work. MM said Loomis/Benson limited the coaching search to experienced coaches last time and we know they won't want a super expensive coach or a coach that wants power. If the same limits are still in place, we probably need to hope Gentry can work it out.

I agree with you I think Dell will make another semi big move this offseason to make this roster better but I also agree I don't think Gentry is the right coach for this team. With all excitement around the team now maybe Benson will be willing to pay for Jeff Van Gundy

Results vary here. Better lately (BDJ RIP, Ennis, Frazier) but some whiffs/absurd overlaps before (Steamer, Salmons, Fredette). My hope is he seemed to have no idea how to build a small ball roster (which he said he wanted). Maybe he has a better grasp for a more traditional one

Do think trading/attaching the remaining 2nd for a player makes sense right now.

Spot on about sunk cost. Demps got a top 10 player to NO with his shitty asset gathering. Praise for that. He's sticking around unless Cousins self immolates.
