Thanks for the recap. Couldn't listen to this podcast because Strauss is the most insufferable person covering the nba.
Amin was on Zach Lowe's latest pod and mentioned the Pelicans as his most intriguing team in the west going into next year. Said we should see huge improvements on both sides of the ball next year.
Zach Lowe said Davis will win the MVP next year. That was the extent of the Pels talk

There were a few other interesting bits on the Lowe Post.
- Phoenix's injury management was so good in part because trainers had the ability to fine players for not doing work/treatment. I wonder if Gentry will bring that to NOLA
- Meyers Leonard and Festus Ezeli are looking at $7 and $8 million per on the low end next offseason.

Lowe Post with SVG had some Pels related talk too:
Lowe asked if traditional stretch 4s like Frankensova/Anderson have been solved by smaller defenders. SVG said no for those guys because they can grab OREB. In Orlando, he would tell Anderson to crash the glass if they switched on him. Anderson in Orlando was an excellent OREB
And lots of talk about the Baynes (and Rashard Lewis Orlando max) contract. SVG defends the move by explaining how there's more to it internally than the way it is covered via $$ value. Really interesting and honest insider view point for those still struggling with Asik's contract.
And Strauss is insufferable.

The different view seemed like a combination of realistic expectations and win now mode. Bloggers say "go for value because it allows you to execute future move X because X could happen (not because X will happen)", SVG was saying I need the best roster I can get now because I have to actually play other teams every night and want the best chance to win. That's probably part of why the coach/GM dual role is so hard because part of you cares about long term more and part of you cares about short term more.

But he's got Jeff Bower running his scouting. What could possibly go wrong?
Even beyond win now v flexibility, I thought the overpaid v value signing points were interesting. SVG was basically griping about the instant/good or bad coverage these moves get in the media when chemistry and fit are things that can't be determined so easily...e.g. Greg Monroe is a max guy in Milwaukee, but he is not a max guy in Detroit. I wasn't quite buying his pro Baynes arguments, but we'll see. Basketball moves, much more so than football or baseball IMO, demand to be viewed in context. In context, bringing back Asik makes a ton of sense for the Pels rather than having to clear space and then hope a better 5 signs on.
It also speaks to some of the "most of the production at half the cost" that everyone wants. We've seen first hand how well or poorly that can go. If you hit, great. If not, you get a perimeter trio of Jimmer, Rivers, and Salmons. I mean, some people were seriously tossing out signing Biyombo (so cheap!!) to replace Asik. On a team with 50 win aspirations for this season.
The Rashard Lewis discussion was compelling in this regard too. That move was widely ridiculed, yet he was an outstanding fit for what they were doing and worth the $. The "situational superstar" that Ziller wrote about is a real thing.
Quick aside- looking up Asik's contract, I'm seeing BBall Insiders and SportTrac listing year 5 as an ETO. Is that true? That's not necessarily bad news, but it makes the deal a little worse for the Pels if he has an ETO for year 5.

lets not forget (as youve pointed out) how good a player rashard lewis was for the magic...they went to the finals for chrissakes.
the most interesting thing from the amin podcast i thought was the all too brief comments about the pels and coaching. clearly amin (and others) feel that despite the injuries, that team with AD underachieved substantially on defense, and incrementally on offense. i think its clear there is a consensus on the fact that monty williams and his staff were not up to the task of helping this team make the turn, and i really am glad our FO saw it too, and had the courage to fire a playoff coach who was wildly popular with the players
my optimism for what the staff can do, and what AD can do, it starting to get irrational

What I've seen reported has been a little unusual. On the one hand it's a player option (ETO), on the other hand it's only partially guaranteed ($3ish I think), so it seems like a situation where either party could walk away.
Posted on 8/6/15 at 11:48 am to TigerinATL
That's what I've seen, too. Also, that the 4th year is only guaranteed for ~9 mil. So if it isn't working out after 3 years and roughly 30 mil, he could be stretched for ~2.5 mil a year for 5 years (which is nothing in the new cap environment). It's a weird contract, but isn't nearly as bad as first reported.

What is up with everyone getting in the best shape of their lives? Tyreke and Gordon are down right skinny, Ryno was looking slimmer. Is it as simple as run and gun vs. grind it out? Or is there some motivation factor that was missing previously?
