Who's the best country singer of all time?

Here's some of my candidates
Merle - I've never heard a haggard song I didn't like, and I love how he's wasn't scared to share his political views in his songs like, are the good times really over, or fighting side of me.
Also, here's a lesser known Merle song that really is an awesome song
Kern River
Hank Jr. He had the same attitude as Merle but more rowdy, a lot of people don't like that style but man I love it like all my rowdy friends are coming over tonight
Or when he made songs like all my rowdy friends have settled down and old habits. Those are amazing.
Hank Sr. Don't evan have to say much about him, over 500 songs that'll still tear you apart to this day in only 7 years or so.
I'll never get out of this world alive and long gone lonesome blues are two that will make you cry.
George Strait- I love songs like Amarillo by morning, but some of his other songs venture into the pop style, and which I just don't get into.
Waylon - I never got into Waylon that much but I do love songs like rainy day woman, lukenbach Texas, and good ole boys.
Willie Nelson - Seven Spanish Angels with ray Charles is one of the greatest county songs ever, blue eyes crying in the rain and countless more, boxcars definitely at the top somewhere
Coe- longhaired redneck, uneasy rider, and countless more classics. Also has that hank jr attitude
Jones- another one that's definitely at the very top with of course he stopped loving her today and ones like who's gonna fill their shoes, or the one I loved back then. Classic.
Skynrd- I can only imagine if the plane crash wouldn't have happened. All I can do is write about it is one of the best songs of all time
And of course big john cash
Dark horses - Yoakam and Charlie Daniels
The devil went down to Georgia gives me chills
Honorable mention
Marty Robbins
Lefty Frizzle
Charlie Pride
Conway
Chris Ledoux

I lean toward Willie Nelson. I absolutely love his phrasing.

Hank Jr doesn't get near the respect he deserves. Awesome songwriter.

Agree. He has some absolutely great songs

To answer your question as you posed it-George Strait and it ain't even close. 61 total number ones on the country AT 40.
Also note that he has been under MCA most of that span- same as was Skynyrd. I'm partial to the outlaw country genre myself. 75-80 Willie and Waylon and the boys...I'm sure Skynyrd was part of the clan..

I would say Hank Sr, Strait, Merle, Conway.
Speaking of Jones and 'He Stopped Loving Her Today' - he despised the song early on. He would make fun of it during the recording sessions during the melody. He had a tough time recording it and parts of it are spliced together because he could never get it right. He called it a 'dark son of a bitch' and didn't think it would do well.

Kristofferson is far and away the best songwriter, I'd go Waylon as a performer.

Best Country singer = Vern Gosdin.

OK. This is the second time we've done this thread this week. We still haven't established the criteria that should be used to determine the "greatest" country singer. Is it "voice" ? Is it # of hit singles ? Is it # of albums ? Longevity ? There is no right or wrong answer as I can see it.

Agreed. Too many variables and no set criteria to measure it from. Honestly if it weren't for the Chris Gaines experiment and the recent rise of "Bro County", which is now trendy to say it started with Garth, then Garth Brooks is the most logical answer. I think Hank Sr is hands down the greatest influence on country music, but not the best of all time.
