I guess you aren't going to respond to my comment, which all but confirms it is a true statment.

Oh yeah... another fun fact: great way to annoy my gf is to sing any PJ song (from ten) in an over the top Eddie Vedder vocal styling... Jeremy is the best... sure to get under her skin... but its oh so fun! try it with the loved one in your life... now if she sings along and seems to enjoy it, kick her to the curb, yo!

She was always more of Gits, Fastbacks, Melvins gal... way more hardcore than me...

No, it confirms that it's so ridiculous that it's not worth my time telling you.

Mrs Doc has a healthy amount of hate for PJ as well. A real keeper.

t's hard to say, obviously.... But I strongly feel Kurt would have still been a relevant artist these days, by now, as probably a solo act...

It would have been extremely hard to maintain the level of popularity and success that Nirvana achieved for the past 20 years... my guess is he'd have continued to make good music, that most likely, would have become a little "softer" over the years... I doubt it would be in the same neighborhood of the "rock" kids listen to today...

This is a pretty fair assessment. I think Cobain would have had a very Mark Lanegan-like career. the band was very nearly done, much in the same way Archers of Loaf or Pavement called it quits early and still saw their stature grow over the years despite other successful projects (well, for indie rock).

The one thing I will disabuse young kids of is the notion that Nirvana got popular because Cobain died. Nirvana was huge already, and they had by far the better critical rep and were considered more honest scenesters. Pearl Jam was more popular, but punk/indie guys never considered PJ part of the scene and dismissively wrote them off as poseurs. Part of that is unfair, but PJ did have a classic arena rock sound and they simply weren't the small punk band Nirvana was.

Whatever. Mudhoney was still better than all of them. And they actually lived through their heroin addictions.*

*Actually, Pearl Jam's poor rep among indie kids stems from the root of the band and Mudhoney's creation story. Green River broke up because half the band wanted commercial success, and the other half wanted to stay "pure". One half formed Mudhoney, and the other half formed Mother Love Bone.Pearl Jam didn't live under the shadow of Cobain at first, but of Mark Arm.

In the end, both got what they wanted. Arm is an indie god and Eddie Vedder is rich.

Nirvana is one of the most over hyped bands of the 90s. If not for Butch Vig, Nevermind would be as unlistenable as most of In Utero and all of Bleach is. Doesn't mean I'm not a fan of some of their stuff, but there were many bands just as good or better from that era.

The Alice in Chains album "Dirt" was probably the best rock album of the 90s, followed closely by "Ten" from Pearl Jam.

I'm really just tired of seeing Cobain in any of the Greatest Guitarist of All Time lists. I see it way too often, and he has no business in any of them.

that's just not true

you may not like Nirvana and that's fine, but there's no denying his music was tremendously impactful

WOW

In Utero is a better record than Nevermind IMO

just because it's not as poppy doesn't mean it's not as good. Some of you clowns need to expand your mind.

Cdawg... I see youve showed your sensitive spot with PJ

Nah, I just think they're all on about equal footing even though one is punk, one is metal, one is rock and one is rock/metal. I wouldn't say any one of them is better than the others. It's like I'd rather rank my favorite albums from them or the whole grunge thing rather than rank the bands.

I honestly never listened to Pearl jam after 10 b/c vs got played so much I wanted to punch people in the throats when they started belting Daughter. I didn't even think about them and almost despised them until I heard bits of their avocado album.

I still like listening to early Soundgarden and always liked Alice in Chains. But I was listening to them before the explosion of Nevermind which I never cared for. I'd just prefer In Utero.

Their music was influential, sure. HIs guitar playing was mediocre at best.

Does anyone throw Mad Season with Layne Staley and McCready in with this list, or just going with Nirvana, AIC and PJ?

again that's only if you're saying the "great guitar player" scale is topped out by Yngwie Malmsteen then okay that's fine. I guess under that standard you wouldn't be able to list Kurt. But if we're talking about who was more influential in the history of rock then what does that list look like.

Just because YOU don't like Nirvana doesn't mean everyone else shares your view or even the way in which you're going about rating people.

Most importantly though, how was the sound that was coming from his playing?

Who had better brushstrokes? Titian or Willem de Kooning? who's work would you rather be hanging on your wall?
