Is there a more sterile, generic, non-threatening band than Foo Fighters?

The mainstream media and Middle America have anointed Foo Fighters as The Rock Band to represent the whole genre. The only problem is, they are a boring outfit led by one of the biggest egomaniacs in the business.

Sonic Highways was nothing more than a self-indulgent puff piece thought up by Grohl so he could try and show that he's gritty and into to the roots of music. So he co-opts the actual musical history of various cities as a vehicle to push his shite music. And OMG, did you hear he played shows with a broken leg? You don't have to ask him, he'll tell you all about it.

It's time people started standing up and saying no more Wal-Mart rock. No more generic, forgettable slog. No more riding the coattails of musicians with actual talent.

Just because he doesn't like your bland garbage doesn't mean he's trolling.

I agree with OP. I'll never understand why people that fancy themselves music fans actually like that stuff. I can't think of a more generic, uninteresting rock band outside of Nickleback. At least I can laugh at them.

He got old. The music he makes/made (he's near 50 the best is behind him) has been mimicked for 20+ years.

The fact that it WAS alternative and is NOW main stream is something that lends itself to mockery. Just make sure not to miss the irony as you mock. That is if you are old enough to remember SubPop music on a cassette tape. At the time it was that, or metal (GnR or Metallica), or Color Me Bad.

The Color and the Shape is really good. As far as bland mainstream rock goes, they are certainly better than Coldplay or Nickelback.

Have to agree. Never saw the appeal of Foo Fighters.

Though I love their cover of Baker Street.

I find it funny that other than a few horns at the end, there is no discernible trace of the native music Grohl claimed to be paying tribute to in that entire album

All I'm saying is that when people that purport to be huge music fans like Foo Fighters it kind of blows my mind. It's objectively generic and unimaginative music.

i wont say the foo fighters are the worst, but they are about as vanilla as it comes and their status as being the pinnacle of real rock n roll in this day and age has not been a great thing for rock being an edgy/dangerous/pushing the boundaries/interesting type of genre. they are about as safe as safe could be.

The Foo Fighters have aged over the course of 20+ years, same as any other band would. Honestly, I relegated them to a distanced status back around "Learn To Fly", but I don't know what other direction they could have gone in. It was obvious then that they were just going to keep on getting more and more accessible.

It can be argued that it would be just as much a disservice to purposely make dissonant, artistically challenging music just to appeal to a more haughty audience even if that's not what they are truly inspired to do. That's real pretentiousness of the worst kind IMO. (Ref: Pearl Jam circa Vitalogy)

I know that the two early shows I saw were a perfect balance of "indie" style grittiness and tuneful firepower, not completely unlike Nirvana in the best aspects of that comparison. If I had a band and could project that, I would feel pretty damn good about it.

The musical equivalent of Mitt Romney; bland, boring, vanilla, soul-less, and safe milquetoast. Grohl should have been the Nirvana member to die.

What leads you to believe it's a troll? He made nothing but valid points. It's bland, unimaginative garbage and Grohl sniffs his own farts.
