Is Eric Clapton The Most Overrated Guitarist Of All Time?

I've seen him twice and he is a mediocre musician at best. Very boring.

his style is subtle, not flashy. When his rep was built it was in the 60s, before even Hendrix. Now he is damn good, but not the best ever

Clapton owes his career to Duane Allman. Much like Gregg did, Clapton rode his coattails long after his death.

Clapton was coattail rider his whole career. John Mayall, Steve Winwood, Ginger Baker & Jack Bruce, Duane Allman.

He was referred to as "God", so yes.

Clapton boys get mad when you tell them he was the third best musician in Cream.

Maybe a hair since he was inducted 3 times into HoF.
But he displayed tremendous versatility across his career and is incredibly soulful/naturally adept at the blues style for a guy from Southern England. I'm not as big of a fan of his songwriting and obviously his vocals aren't very good, but he is exceptionally talented and very influential dating back to the beginning of the '60s.
Not sure where OP is coming from, I saw him a couple of years ago at the Juicebox and he was killing it for a guy his age.

The beta ginger in Phish takes the title.

He is not overrated. How old are you guys that think he is?
From Guitarworld:
Today, Clapton enjoys an enviable spot as one of the most respected elder statesmen in rock and blues. And although he happily handed over the guitar-god mantle decades ago, he’s not averse to melting a few faces when the opportunity arises. Guitar World looks back at Clapton’s 50-plus-year career and pinpoints what we consider to be the 10 greatest guitar moments—thus far. Our list digs deep into his six-string artistry, putting the emphasis on the playing and not necessarily the hits.
Enjoy:

I thought he was boring when I was young but then I started listening to him when I was in my 20s and if anything I'd say he's underrated.

"Eric Clapton—who graces the cover of the July 2016 issue of Guitar World—has revealed he is suffering incurable damage to his nervous system. The condition apparently leaves him struggling to play guitar.
Clapton, 71, who—in decades past—publicly fought addictions to cocaine, heroin, alcohol and prescription drugs, added that although he's grateful to be alive, he has been debilitated by his illness."

I mean like late 60s early 70s Clapton was objectively pretty good at guitar
His music has always kinda sucked though and he was carried by better musicians for all of his best work (Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominos, Cream, Bluesbreakers)
If the question was overrated musician then yeah he's up there. But dude could shred back in the day, no denying it.

You've got who's riding whose coat tails backwards here, bub

As a rock guitarist? Probably.
As a blues guitarist? Probably not.

Not the most overrated, but definitely overrated.

Clapton's drug usage was just absolutely awful, though. He never gets lumped in with Moon, Morrison, or Joplin because he lived through it and that dude snorted some heroin and coke. He formed Derek and the Dominoes as a way to make enough money to stay fricked up...but he certainly wanted NO notoriety from that. Clapton was quite the shut in addict for most of 1973-75. He finally formed his own band and somehow got clean. NO way that dude was meant to live. He's had quite a tragic/charming life.
But he was a great guitarist who got big and made others big, too. He was not a HUGE songwriter and borrowed from the likes of Hendrix, Marley, and even songwriters who never even had a hit. He KNEW what people liked and what he liked. To me, Clapton making "I Shot the Sheriff" into a classic hit for himself and Bob Marley is more impressive than his playing ability. HIs band deserves more credit than his guitar playing on that.
As for better guitarists, I can think of 5 off the top who I think are better, but I will save that ammo for another thread.
