I can't say 100 percent that's how it got there, but i do remember the first time hearing her and saying, this sounds like a pop song.

partially like Tim Wilson said

... It'd be nice if Hip-Hop's arse would finally learn to play three cords
And I'm about fed up with Nashville's arse
And the "Hand-me-a-trophy" awards...

"Garth Brooks did for country music what panty hose did for finger fvcking."
-Waylon Jennings

There is the answer.

I've always held fast to my opinion that it really started to take hold with Tim McGraw. That shite stick, in my opinion, has been pretty consistent with his pop country style from the get go.

Garth Brooks and Shania Twain are responsible for this.

Kenny Rogers preceded Garth and Shania.

Plus Nashville's overwhelming lust for 'crossover' success.

You can trace it back even further to Jim Reeves in the '50s

People like to pin it on Garth but he stayed pretty true to his country roots at the height of his popularity. It wasnt until '98 that he kind of changed his act and it wasn't well received at all. The only thing he proved was you didn't have to just stand on stage and strum a steel guitar to play to a country crowd. He was and is a showman. One of the best I've ever seen actually.

Country radio stations popularity and influence in the 80s started it. Rock stations declined, stuck mostly to classics and lacked any new blood bands with talent to write. Remember that Rita Coolidge, Ronstadt, Loggins and Messina, Hall &Oates and singers/bands like these played on the rock stations before that. Country went from Porter Waggoner twang to this midsound vibe and ultimately adapting power electric sound versus the acoustic sound. There was a shift but it was radio that did it.
