Along the lines of Jefferson Airplane...the first band that comes to mind for me is Chicago.

From Does anyone really know that time it is, I'm a Man, 25 or 6 to 4, Saturday in the Park, etc to the 1980s crap.

Most of the 70-80's rock bands did it.

Heart with MTV

Rush with their synthesizers.

Journey with Steve Perry

Styx-Dennis DeYoung, all his bullshite

The formula in the late 80's- early 90's was one hard song, one ballad.

So you could go down the list of all the Metal groups. Even GNR with Axel's hair in Jungle could be considered a sell out. What are you going for here. They all needed to sell albums.

I don't think that was really selling out. I think they only recorded one song under 4 minutes in that entire era. It was quite a change from the guitar-driven sound, but selling out kind of requires molding the band into the radio format.

I did not know until today that there was a Journey without him.

They moved away from rock to more pop as his voice was pushed front a center. That is why there is almost no difference in his solo stuff. It is also why he can't sing anymore

How do you sell out on your first album? I think Welcome to the Jungle was even their first video.

Nahhh.....they did their best stuff with Perry. Before that they were a San Francisco jam band that no one cared about.

Noted. I was making the point that the original band changed to sell more albums, more videos, etc.

I'd like to nominate Staind for at least an honorable mention....pretty good hard stuff until 'its been awhile,' which i thought was an awesome song, until everything that followed became whiny ballad-type stuff...

Keeping your sound the same but growing your fan base isn't selling out. Having a sound then completely trashing it in favor of a more mainstream sound is selling out. KOL is the definition of selling out. Don't disagree with Aerosmith, but they were super old by the time Pink came out so they get a pass. Airplane/Starship were basically two different groups. KOL played their new album live cover here in Nashville when it first came out and people were walking out 3 songs in. Couldn't give away tickets for a concert at the minor league park Friday night. They pissed off their old fans who loved the first 2 albums. Use Somebody fans hopped off the bandwagon quickly. They continue to make water downed shite rock no one wants to hear.
