Edit - I retract my statement. Didn’t realize REM has sold 90 million albums in their career. Not a lot of up-to-date statistics on Radiohead, but I saw an estimate of 47 million. I wonder if Radiohead releasing a few albums during the streaming era influences that.

i am not sure if they continued to do it but Radiohead was giving away free downloads of their albums at one time.

Still though, Radiohead can still headline large festivals and produce a tour of sold out large venues. Not sure REM would have that pull.

Radiohead's first release was May 1992. REM's was August 1982. So, you have a 10 year difference. Not sure that's really a fair comparison.

Exactly what I was thinking.
Radiohead couldn’t pull off the tour that The Cure just had IMO

I guess Nickelback opening for Three Doors Down. Tickets were cheap in 2000.

Not necessarily bigger but I saw Soundgarden open for Guns n Roses and I saw The Black Crowes open for Robert Plant.

In Nov 1987 at Tipitinas I saw Jane's Addiction open for Love and Rockets. On the ticket it was misspelled as "James Addiction

That's the one that comes to mind. But I still prefer L&R over JA. Just saw L&R a month ago and they were great.

A couple 3 years ago I saw Charley Crockett open for Shinyribs and CC has blown up now.

In 1990 at Tipitinas I saw Nine Inch Nails open for The Jesus and Mary Chain. Saw them for $1 a few months later too.

In 1990 I saw Alice in Chains open at Tips for someone I cant recall currently. Anyone recall who?

1977 or 1978? (it was a fog back then) I saw Van Halen open up. then Cheap Trick, for Ted Nugent at Bay City Central High School in Bay City, Michigan. Looking back at what a gem that was.

Saw Queen open for Mott the Hoople in '75. Mott had a nice career, but no doubt that Queen surpassed them in terms of popularity.

Some of these are really interesting like above and the ones with GnR, The Scorpions, Frampton, etc.

Sometimes you don't realize you're witnessing something really special. For me it was Jane's Addiction. Didn't know much about them in 1987. They only had a live album out at the time.

No Doubt opening for Public Enemy at the Varsity 92' comes to mind. I remember thinking who is this hot chick and wondered if they were from New Orleans.
