I went to Tunnel, Twilo, and Vinyl -- much more of a house music scene by then.

The only club experience I have in H-Town is Hyperia. See above.

Limelight...now that's a place I have always wanted to go in NYC.

moved to houston in 90 and started going to trash disco at tower theater then red square and power tools (my all time FAV club!)

My buddy was a bouncer at Tower Theater. I saw CCCP-American Soviets, Oriental Express fame there. It was them playing a record and two dudes lip syncing. It was bad but pre Milli Vanilli scandle. Another buddy DJ'd at Pwer Tools on Sunday nights summer of '91. So we were there a good bit.

In high school, we would have school mates that had access to commerical/industrial units and we;d set up or own house parties. Those ended up being some killer parties. I don't know if you remember a band called The Hunger from Houston, but we got them to play at one of them. Good times.

You Houston guys remember a club in the 80's called The Rocksy? I was never all that much of a club guy but I used to go to that place once in a while. They had a great dance floor with a neon light show that was somehow synced to the music. That + Ultravox = very trippy.

help me out with the themes:

- i remember school with the go-go girls dressed up like cheerleaders complete with pompoms running through the crowd and an old dude on stage with a megaphone shouting NO RUNNING

- nursery rhyme night complete with 'bo peep' and a couple of actual fricking sheep running around

- stream-of-conciscious night (kinda lame) some chicks laying down or on various stages would just talk random shite into microphones hooked up to tiny amps nearby

- workshop night where they had actual power tools, sprinklers & shite.

- remember Pop goes the weasel cuz th weasel goes pop and some go go dancer on a cube covered in glow-paint wearing a hat with one long flower on it and she was popping the frick out of that little daisy. i was spellbound for hours.

- always loved to 'chill' outside under the interstate. great to get a little fresh air and catch some guy with a guitar singing.

I can barely remember those power tool nights. I think Sundays were just music and not any themes that I remember. Everybody was a ferak back then to me.

The Hunger played way before they became real popular. I think one of the bandmates graduated from my high school or soemthing and came back to play a warehouse party.

They spelled it Rocksy. I think there was another place that came along later spelled Roxy, not sure. Anyway, I want to say it was on either Westheimer or Richmond just inside the loop.

Do you guys listen to Matt Sebastian's Sunday Night "Darkwave" show on Siriusxm ch 34? That is one show that exemplifies the sound we are talking about. His playlists are awesome and it is easy to get a request in.

Back in the day there was a great alt radio station in Toronto CFNY – Rush’s spirit of radio was written about the station. In the link below is a list of their charts from 78 to early 90s. I have made some great 80s playlists from the listing. My wife still loves the music and I listen to it but not non stop like she does
For me back in the day it was
Flock of Seagulls – I ran
Depeche Mode
Hair cut 100
Heaven 17
Human league
Iggy Pop
INXS
Joy Division
Modern English
Naked Eyes
OMD
Pet Shop Boys
Soft Cell
Pete Shelly - Homosapien – this was real standard
Ska – like UB40
Wall of Voodoo
Yaz

These are based on some that others have missed. There are lots of others but if you want a blast from the past check out the link.

Ya channel 34 on XM is a good way to catch up w/ the 80s

This Must Be The Place

Genius Of Love

Burning Down The House

And since it hasn't been listed (I think) Rock the Casbah, and props to Cad on Shriekback. I had Oil & Gold on vinyl. Evrything that Rises yo.

That was one of the best commercial radio stations ever. I learned about so many good bands from that station. Squeeze, Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, Bruce Cockburn, FM, Nash the Slash, on and on. Phenomenal.

All that stuff seems quaint and innocuous now but I absolutely hated it while it was going on. South Louisiana clubs mostly went for that kinda thing and shied away from the better, more exotic sounding music.

I called it Orchestra Strike Disease.

I look forward to this thread each year. Probably my favorite thing to talk about on the Music Board.

I own about 7000 12 inch singles from 1970s-2005.

Almost every song mentioned in this thread so far is on my wall of vinyl in my home office right here next to me. When all of the local DJs started selling their collections in the late 90s/early 2000s, I started scooping these up for 2 or 3 dollars a piece.

There are a few things that I don't have. I'll eventually locate them :)

Well, that's fine. There weren't going to be large areas of the South that picked up on the "more exotic" stuff (and I put Shriekback("Nemesis") and MCL("Rigor Mortis") in that group.

"Quaint and innocuous" or not, it's what was played, and generally, I liked most of it. It was still based on funk, soul, and R & B, which I loved at the time (and still do). And most importantly, it put asses on the dance floor. "Nemesis" and "Boing, Boom, Tschack" weren't ever going to find a big audience down here. Playing too many songs like that was a sure way to drive the girls away.

And "exotic" doesn't necessarily mean "better".
