Another Matrix vote here. Went in opening night not knowing a single thing about the movie. Life before the internet and if there was hype about the movie before hand I had not heard it.
They did a brilliant job of marketing this movie. The "what is the matrix?" theme had audiences built up with suspense. No one knew exactly what they were going into the theater to see. The previews only really showed Trinity suspended in air kicking a guy in the face and running along the wall. They also showed the agent dodging bullets on the roof. I remember me and everyone around us constantly saying "what?" and "dammnnnn" the whole movie.

Honestly Independence day when it came out and I was a kid was incredible imo.

I haven't seen this yet. I have been trying to avoid any spoilers, so I don't even know how it has been received. Is it really that good?

I mean, it's fine for getting your Star Wars Empire vs Rebellion fix. But there is nothing unique about it. The story is extremely predictable, through no fault of it's own... it's set immediately before Star Wars. If you saw that, you know the motivation. The biggest points of excitement are seeing some "old faithful" elements return to action... if you've seen Star Wars, and think about the Empire, it's obvious what they are.
Mild spoiler, which doesn't detract from the plot:
it doesn't even address the formation of the rebellion, they are already organized.

Always my pick for "movie I wish I could see again for the first time"

Aliens and Total Recall (1990) were basically my Star Wars as a kid. I thought they were just incredible. Nowadays with most movies you go in with some kind of expectation.

Thanks. I didn't have too high of expectations for it being that it is a side story. I was surprised that someone said it blew them away.

Dazed and Confused was so spot-on, so immersive, it was really like being back in high school in '76.

Aliens, T2, The Matrix... but probably nothing beats seeing Jurassic Park the first time in the theater.
Oh and Porky's!

When I was a kid, Jurassic Park.
As an adult, Gladiator. I hadn't seen a single preview or even heard of the movie. A group of friends were going to see it and invited me along. I was very glad I went.

There are about 4 films that completely changed the way I looked at film:
Murder on the Orient Express - First really memorable period piece. More nostalgic than anything. But watched it with my dad when I was sick. Think I was about 13 or 14 at the time.
Seven Samurai - Obvious Reasons.
Pi was like the first real independent film I saw. After that, I began to seek out every single film I could get my eyes on.
City Lights.

Yes, that movie left me literally with no words for almost an hour. Absolutely phenomenal, epic, film.
I really with I'd gotten to see The Matrix and The Prestige for the first time in the theater.
