Pi was like the first real independent film I saw. After that, I began to seek out every single film I could get my eyes on.
Good ones

The Tree of Life. That said, I did not enjoy it. But the visual aspect is incredible.

They say there are only 2 movies that can blow you away on the big screen.
2001
and
Lawrence of Arabia
(I've seen neither on the big screen but Lawrence is my GOAT film of all-time.)
But I was so mesmerized by the movie on just a big TV that I was so giddy owning one of those newfangled "letterbox editions"...
If they could ever transfer Lawrence to IMAX that would be the greatest movie experience of all-time. The wide open hot desert...insane.

The matrix is easily atop this topic. I think people forget how incredible the effects were. It's like how a 30-40 year old today had to hear his dad tell him how awesome Star Wars was with the effects. Those same 30-40 year olds had that same experience with the Matrix, but teenagers today will never understand that about that movie.
I'll throw in The Hangover. I was told how awesome it was several times. Figured it would be alright but wouldn't live up to what everyone said, and it surpassed that with flying colors. Superbad is a cloae second to the hangover.

Kingsman. I had no idea going what I was in for going in.

If I had to pick only one movie, it would be Star Wars. I can still imagine the feeling I got as a little kid when that booming music started! I don't know how many times I went back to see it at the theater.
Extremely close 2nd- Superman. I went in thinking it was going to be like the Batman TV show. I was in awe.

Inception blew my mind when I saw it in theaters because of its premise and visuals.
The message of the Big Short blew me away. I left that theater stunned at what exactly had happened in 2008, the reasons behind it, and the fallout.

Jaws. My grandfather took me and my cousin to see it and it was the first time me or him had ever went to a theater. My Paw Paw fell a sleep five minutes in and me and my cousin were just in complete awe the entire two hours.

Obviously The Matrix. I couldn't stop thinking about it for days afterwards. Just blew me away.
Jurrasic Park is another. I was just in awe of what I was watching. Saw it 3 times in the theater.
I felt devastated after watching Saving Private Ryan and Schindlers list.

Another Matrix vote here. Went in opening night not knowing a single thing about the movie. Life before the internet and if there was hype about the movie before hand I had not heard it. Not sure with the internet if it possible to go into a movie like that without a ton of hype surrounding it. But was completely blown away.

Don't know how everyone has overlooked what is perhaps the greatest cinematic achievement of our time...
Sharknado!

Another vote for Jaws. It consumed America, the lines were literally down the street.
Amazing movie and it did make you want to not go back in the water again.

Well... Star Wars in 1977, when I was 8. Sci-fi movies were always great for the imagination, but until that film, nothing in the genre came remotely close visually.
LOTR- The Fellowship of the Ring, as an adult. I knew the books well, having read them many times. The story, the visuals... they could never do it live before, the technology couldn't capture the visuals until then.
And on top of that, they made it with respect and played it completely seriously. It was profoundly glorious to have seen it the first time, and realized they made a masterpiece.
