This movie looks like the Dungeons & Dragons film with a higher budget

That movie has one of the all time greatest director actor commentaries.

It was recorded before the movie hit theaters and features director Courtney Solomon with actor Justin Whalin. Both are incredibly sure it's going to do very well and think they have created a top notch film in the fantasy genre. They even go into things that were set up and/or purposefully left out for future sequels.

Warcraft premiered today in some more European Countries, most notably Germany & Russia. European Reviews (non-RT Certified) that have come out today have generally been good compared to US Reviews.

Some of the ones floating around on Twitter:

Moviebreak - 5/10
PC Games - 4/5
Movie Jones - 3.5/5
Blogbusters - 4/5

Along with others.

Like OML said earlier I think it's not going to do as well here in the US but rather rely on its domestic totals to where it can be financially successful or not.

The guys over at Schmoes Know & Collider (Harloff, Ellis & Campea) all gave it a fresh score ranging from 6-6.5/10, a step in the right direction for video games adapted on the big screen.

All I needed to reaffirm my willingness to go see this thing after being invested in WoW for so many years.

If it has Enhancement Shaman wielding a 2h mace with Rockbiter, I'm in.

Some more critic reviews in.

Stefan Pape - HeyUGuys (1/5):
This production may be titled 'The Beginning', but on this showing it would be a spectacular surprise if we ever saw the middle, or the end.

Tom Huddleston - Time Out (2/5):
Like its ten-foot anti-heroes, 'Warcraft' is noisy, lumbering and not terribly bright.

Helen O'Hara - Daily Telegraph (UK) (2/5):
While there's something admirable in Jones's steadfast adherence to naff fantasy tropes, it makes no concession to fans of realism.

Anton Bitel - Little White Lies (3/5):
Despite the silly names and cheesy nerdism there's plenty of fun to be had in Duncan Jones' video game adaptation.

This movie arrives in theaters 10 years too late. It really missed its window for when WoW was "hot."

Personally, I think they should have made the whole thing animated. Their cinematic openings for their games were usually incredible. They should have got those guys to make their film.

A few more critics weighed in last night, the film's now down to 25% on the Tomatometer but did bump up a little bit yesterday on Metacritic up to 37.

Kevin Harley - Total Film
quote:

Warcraft occasionally manages to feel both rushed and dull, impressively staged and disengaged. True, a few quips in the abyss help to alleviate the lumbering piece. But there aren't enough
Original Score: 3/5

Jack Shepherd - Independent (UK)
quote:

It feels like the fanboy within Duncan Jones got carried away with Azeroth's minute mythology, leading to a film filled with tonnes of references to the wider world but no real soul of its own.
Original Score: 2/5

Olly Richards - Empire Magazine
quote:

At once empty and impenetrable, this brings to mind a mix of John Carter and Dungeons And Dragons, regrettably in both themes and level of enjoyment.
Original Score: 2/5

Appears that people who were/are fans of the game may enjoy as it seems fan responses have been fairly positive, critically won't be a success shamefully. Gotta wonder how it'll do towards the general audience now.

I'm really wondering how this plays in the Asian markets. WoW was extremely popular, and while Starcraft was more popular, the WC love was huge. It COULD kill it in Korea/China/Japan.

I think I saw something where the movies made 2 million just from China on the midnight showing alone. Warcraft is absolutely huge in the Asian Markets.

Also heard it's selling out in Russia as well, think it's going have to do well internationally overall to be a financial success. I just don't see it being huge in the US.

sounds like its gonna do about like Pacific Rim did - it was lukewarm in the US, but crushed it overseas.

i also think its too little too late, but ill still see it.

I actually like Dungeons & Dragons in a so bad it's good way. Plus that female mage is pretty good eye candy.

Same.

And I'd like to see them bring Sargeras to the big screen. The Sundering would also make a great film.

Post-Memorial Day Weekend Update:

Down to 22% on RT, slid 1 point on Metacritic to a 36.

Warcraft makes 31.7 Million on Opening Weekend #1 in 19 out of 20 Markets

A couple new reviews today coming in:

Kevin Harley - The List
quote:

Despite evident passion for the material, Jones rarely musters the persuasive punch needed to bridge the gaps.
Original Score: 3/5

Leigh Singer - IGN Movies
quote:

In a time when too many bloated movie blockbusters feel like they're impersonal video games, it's heartening to see that an actual game can be transformed into an authentically involving movie.
Original Score: 7/10
