After Friday the movie now has grossed $287.6M. Came in 2nd in the US with $10.7M. Made another $21M in China ($145.2M in 4 days).

What do we need for sequels?

Just got out and as a fan of the franchise, I loved it. The recreation of specific places was spot on. Hell for a split second in one scene I thought we were about to find Mankrik's wife. The story was really good, shortened for obvious reasons, but still good.
I can definitely understand how a non Warcraft player would be a little confused especially in the beginning as you basically see this green eyed Orc with horns on his back opening up some portal but you really get no explanation how we got to this point. I was really hoping for more of a backstory to Gul'dan and some of the other main orcs like Durotan and Blackhand.

I came in cold, just wanted to catch a fantasy movie with Ragnar in it
I pretty much understood the Orc angle- other than where the half-breed chick came from. After watching, I'm guessing the Guardian is her father?

I think that's what they were hinting at.

That would be a retcon then. In the game story, Medivh is her lover and the father of her son, Me'Dan.
Garona is half Orc half Draenei.

If I'm looking at this movie with a critical eye, it has a lot of flaws. The pacing is all over the place, some of the acting is pretty bad (that actor that plays Khadgar does not belong in big budget film), the plot is muddled, character development is a bit thin, and I'm just not sure live action is a good choice for a world as fantastical and artistically exaggerated as Azeroth.
It's easy then to see why this movie isn't a big hit with critics, but it's entirely possible to have a good time with this film despite its flaws. I think that's where the disconnect comes from.
It's great fun seeing film representations of areas like Stormwind, Elwynn Forest, Iron Forge (very briefly), and Dalaran (also briefly) along with characters like Durotan, Gul'dan, and Lothar. There's a lot of detail in the world portrayed in the film that remains surprisingly accurate to the video games.
Being a fan of Warcraft makes this film more enjoyable, but I feel like it's worth seeing even if you're not familiar with the games. The scenes with the orcs showcase some impressive CGI and the culture and politics of the orc clans is probably the most interesting aspect of the movie. Durotan and Lothar are interesting co-protagonists. Durotan in particular has a pretty moving arc. Lothar is a likable, roguish protagonist even if a bit one dimensional. The sub-plot between him and his son does fall a bit flat but overall, I enjoyed his scenes.
The clashes between the humans and orcs are also a lot of fun to watch.

It may be where they go with it, but that's not how the lore goes. Garona isn't half Orc half human. She is half Orc half Dreanei.

Gul'dan was extremely well done. They captured him perfectly. Durotan was also done excellently.

For what limited time they were on screen, the high elves looked ridiculous. If there's a Warcraft 2 (film), they need to do a better job of portraying this race as they become more important to the story.
Draenei, Dwarves and Orcs looked great. I did not see any Gnomes or Night Elves.

I know nothing about the game. Never played it. Never wanted to. I went and saw the movie tonight mainly because I love Duncan Jones and Dominic Cooper.
The pacing was just plain awful throughout the first third to half of the movie, like others have said. I still dont think I know half of the names that were thrown around, and I was a bit lost at times, but I really enjoyed the movie. I was surprised the CGI was as good as it was, and there were some great battle scenes. I thought it was going to be a good vs evil movie, but I was surprised there as well, and liked how both sides were portrayed.
I look forward to the sequel, and there will be one. If you go by the 2.5 multiplier of the budget, it would need to hit 400 million to break even, and with the China market exploding, it could hit that this weekend worldwide.

I think it needs $400M to break even going by the x2.5 rule, not sure though.
ETA: Didn't even see Devils there.

You won't see the Night Elves until Kalimdor is shown. The series doesn't branch out from the Eastern Kingdoms until Warcraft 3.

Warcraft finishes up the weekend with $304.7M according to BoxOfficeMojo.
That's not including the numbers from other international markets besides China.

So we getting a sequel or nah?
Posted on 6/13/16 at 7:34 pm to Rayburn8
It's not confirmed, but imo, frick yea we are.
Posted on 6/13/16 at 7:59 pm to Rayburn8
Think it needs 400M to break even, I'd assume it's going to probably make another 100. Probably pretty likely.

It needs more than that. It's got a 160 million dollar budget, which doesn't include marketing. I'd say it needs at least double that for a sequel to even be considered.
$340 MILLION globally

Damn, most people assumed it wouldn't do that great domestically, but only 11% of total gross?
