Why are we even arguing between DDL and Hanks? They are two of the best. There skills are just different. It's like arguing between witch supermodel you would rather bang.
It's my fault. I started it. My bad.

Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump is one of my favorite movie characters ever. Cast Away and SPR are amazing movies, as was Apollo 13. But apart from his signature roles, Hanks's roles are often recycled or fall flat on their face.
How many Dan Brown movies is he going to do that no one cares about? His Walt Disney was pretty rough, and his accent in Catch Me if You Can was horrible and detracted from stellar performances by Leo and Walken. Captain Phillips was the same absurd accent almost.

Not all of that look is an act. He's on the Board of Directors for the WWII Museum in New Orleans & whenever there is an opening to another part, he's always there & always has something close to this look when talking about WWII. When the War in The Pacific exhibit opened up, he was near to tears.

(A) that's just not true, (B) Hanks has never been and never will be as selective in his roles as DDL or many other actors are, and (C) he was fantastic as Hanratty and Phillips.

I just wanted to bump so I could highlight this terrible post.

He frequently plays an "everyman" so I guess you could call that recycled. But he's very good at it so I don't think you can say they fall flat on their face.

and Bridge of Spies proved that Tom Hanks still has it.

I don't care about awards or whatever Hollywood decides to award themselves each year, Hanks in Castaway is easily one of the best performances I've ever seen. I cannot think of many actors that could pull that off. I mean he made you care about a damn volleyball.

i think DDL is a superior actor, but his range is pretty limited. i can't ever think of a time DDL has made me laugh once.
hanks has made me laugh, made me mad, and made me cry.
All of this.
I don't think DDL could have pulled off making me feel sorrow for a man crying about a fricking volleyball. He might have been able to make me feel pity... but not sorrow.

Gleason in particular has astonishing depth considering the range he has. He can disappear into a character while also managing to be dramatic or comic. He is unbelievable.
Good call on Gleason. I never think of him when I think of the best current actors, but he's absolutely up there.
The thing about DDL, though, is that even though he doesn't have the comedic range (though he very well may, he's just never tried it to my knowledge), he still has a lot of range. Yes, Plainview was a rehash of Bill the Butcher, but his characters in Mohicans, Age of Innocence, and (obviously) My Left Foot don't even feel like it's the same guy playing the roles. Given his lack of credits (29 since he started acting in 72), he clearly puts a lot of time in effort into each of them. I think he's probably the best actor of all time, with PSH being might close, but his time invested into each role kind of helps me appreciate what Hanks does even more (80 acting credits since 1980, plus 8 directing including the first episode of BoB, which was great). Hanks doesn't stop and he still does a great job. Dude is a machine.

Yeah - Hanks is in his 60s, now. If he goes "light" and "funny" again, it will be in grandfatherly stuff similar to the stuff for which we mock Deniro.
I was thinking more like Steve Martin.

tom hanks doesn't come close to the comedic range Steve Martin has though.
Tom would probably be the first to admit that.

I do miss Tom Hanks churning out great role after great role.
If anyone appears in too many movies it's Tom. He's a great actor, but he's in a new film it seems every 4 months. I think he needs to be a bit more discriminating in the roles he takes now.

I don't mind, he's never been douchy or pretentious about being an artiste. I can think of a couple actors his age or older who always talk about doing "one for them, one for me," suggesting that they choose half their roles at the studio's request and half for their own noble artistic expression. Hanks is an entertainer. You never see him complaining or acting embarrassed about early roles like Bosom Buddies or Drunk Uncle on Family Ties.
That's different than someone like Deniro who thinks of himself as some kind of counter-cultural artist while taking any role that pays.

That's his most recent work. He won for Lincoln which was the equivalent of Jamie Foxx winning for playing Ray Charles. No one is saying DDL isn't the greatest dramatic actor of all time. I'm just saying he doesn't have the range of Hanks. Do you think DDL could've pulled off something like Cast Away or The Terminal or Catch Me if You Can or Ladykillers, or Green Mile?
I think DDL could be opposite Amy Schumer in a rom-com and be nominated for best actor.
Few people in any profession ever have been as good at what they do as DDL. The guy is beyond amazing.

One of his better roles IMHO
