Oscars are like Super Bowls with agendas. Having over 2 is rarified air

So many people on here think he is overrated which I find utterly laughable

Hanks has more range than DDL? You serious, clark?

ETA I'm a huge Hanks fan, FTR. But that's just laughable.

Name a comedy DDL was in. I'll wait.

Plus, let's be honest, he's at least recycled Bill the Butcher once and he won a fricking Oscar for doing so. Wasn't good enough in 2003, but apparently it was good enough in 2008.

i think DDL is a superior actor, but his range is pretty limited. i can't ever think of a time DDL has made me laugh once.

hanks has made me laugh, made me mad, and made me cry.

One of my favorites The Money Pit...Two Weeks

Everyone in my family does the "Two weeks" bit because of this film.

Some of the best acting in a throwaway comedy film from that era, period.

He should've won for Cast Away. Russell Crowe winning for Gladiator that year was the equivalent of Peyton Manning not getting the Heisman over Charles Woodson.

That's your example for range? Come on. Again, not knocking Hanks but he's pretty much the same guy in every comedy minus a few.

When I think range, I think of all the roles that actor/actress has played that would make me pause and go "I almost forgot that's who that was". Love Denzel movies, but it's rare he's not Denzel. DDL is super picky about his projects so don't hold that against him.

To compare Bill and Plainview is an over simplication of those characters. Just because they were both angry doesn't mean anything.

DDL plays one character every time he's on screen. He's the best at that character, for sure, but his overall acting range is shite compared to the roles Hanks has played.

About the dumbest fricking thing I've read on this board.

It's like people can only remember There Will Be Blood and Gangs when thinking of his body of work.

That's his most recent work. He won for Lincoln which was the equivalent of Jamie Foxx winning for playing Ray Charles. No one is saying DDL isn't the greatest dramatic actor of all time. I'm just saying he doesn't have the range of Hanks. Do you think DDL could've pulled off something like Cast Away or The Terminal or Catch Me if You Can or Ladykillers, or Green Mile?

There's no reason this thread should have become a pissing match about the two. They're really apples and oranges. Lewis is the more talented actor IMO, but he's happy with his simple life and will only take projects when he feels like it, so his body of work just isn't as big as Hanks.

Hanks is the modern day Jimmy Stewart/Cary Grant. So good at pretty much everything, but there's only a few roles where he's stepped out of the Tom Hanks box (Forrest Gump, Ladykillers, Terminal, League of Their Own). Go down his filmography on IMDB and tell me I'm wrong. He's been in a lot of different films, but a majority of those characters are Tom Hanks.

Lewis has range. BUT he is ALL range. Always playing out there over the top characters. Can he play "straight"? Could he be Jim Lovell? Straight laced white bread G-man from the 1960's?

Can Lewis play just "a guy" put in a harrowing situation? He very well may have already, in which case I am asking for an example. I would like to see that?

Absolutely. He just doesn't do those films.

Again, I feel that range of movies and range of acting is getting confused here.

he was pretty funny in Charlie Wilson's War.

I thoroughly enjoyed the banter in that movie.

Ballad of Jack and Rose, The Boxer, In the Name of the Father, Last of the Mohicans (laugh at that one, but it's certainly not an over-the-top role).
