Prince caspian didn't feel like a kids movie. The first sound of the movie was a woman screaming in pain and there was a massacre scene unit.

But I know what you mean about the hobbit. Feels lazy though.

One thing that really bothered me about the movie is Baug (sp?). Why the hell couldn't anybody cut him? I saw him get sliced like 5 times and nothing happened. Wtf?

Also, what was the purpose of the fleece that Thorin gave Bilbo? It never got used in the movie. I thought for sure it was gonna save his life at some point or another.

Re-watch the Fellowship of the Ring and you will learn more about the "fleece".

I'll do that. It's been a while so it might have slipped my mind.

Wouldn't that much gold wreck the entire economy of Middle-Earth? Hyperinflation.

I know it's elves and such, but

This was both fan service and setting up the Lord of the Rings trilogy. That "fleece" is the strongest armor available in all of Middle Earth and saves Frodo's life in the mines of Moria in the Fellowship of the Ring.

It would if the dwarves were willing to spend it. But they will be very parsimonious with it, so not much will actually get into circulation.

Didn't read the whole thread so this may have been touched on already, but when The elf king is talking to Legolas at the end, he tells him to seek out the ranger known as strider...the timeline doesn't add up.

In fellowship and at the end of this, Bilbo is 111...that puts him at around 40 during the hobbit movies I assume. Aragon wouldn't even have been born yet at the end of battle of five armies, much less a man with as much merit as the elf King implies.

If anyone can explain that better I'm all ears.

Nice use of parsimonious.

If I was a stock broker in Gondor, I would still advise my clients to short gold.

Aragorn is of the Dunedain, descendants of the men of Numenor, themselves descendants of the men of Beleriand. These are greater men with long lives. Aragorn is 90 years old at the time of the Lord of the Rings and lives to age 210.

I guess I didn't use the right word since y'all keep putting fleece in quotations. Is chainmail any better?

In fact, Aragorn himself is descended directly from Elrond's brother, Elros, first king of Numenor, who chose to be human but still lived 500 years. Elrond and Elros were half elf/half human - the only ones of their generation. They were allowed to choose to be human or elf - basically mortal or immortal. Elros chose human and Elrond elf. That was why Arwen could choose to give up her mortality in Lord of the Rings, something her dad did not want her to do.

I think it was 60 years between The Hobbit and Fellowship. Aragon was 87 in The Fellowship. So he would've been 27 when the Elf King told Legolas that.

ETA: Never mind, Leon explained it quicker and better.

It is mythril chainmail. Mythril is much stronger than steel and very rare and precious. And entire chainmail shirt made of mythril is, as stated in Lord of the Rings, worth an entire kingdom.

Aragorn is 87 years old in LoTR.

He tells his age during The 2 Towers extended edition.

A quick google search can explain further about this topic. Sorry I don't feel like googling and linking for you.

ETA: Nevermind. You guys cleared that up fast.

He is 87 in the books. In the extended edition of the Two Towers, he actually tells Eowyn he is 90. In my youth it bothered me. Now I don't care and just go with the round number.

Thanks for that! I remember Thorin saying that nothing could pierce it and then we never saw it again. I didn't know it was connected to LotR.

I try to work it in whenever I can.

Good advice regarding gold. I would think there would be a dip, but how connected are these disparate economies really?

It took an entire year for Bilbo to travel back to the Shire from Erebor, if I am not mistaken. Erebor is far to the north, the Shire far to the West, and Gondor far to the south. I think it took the hobbits many months to travel back to the Shire from Gonder after defeating Sauron. So it would seem unlikely that an influx of gold in one economy could have a huge impact on another economy unless there is a good bit of trade. Laketown's trade seemed to be limited to Mirkwood in the movie, and Mirkwood is fairly isolated from man, dwarves, and elves. Mirkwood id comprised primarily of silvan elves, which are elves that never went to Valinor and are considered inferior, so Rivendel, Lothorien, and Grey Havens elves do not interact with them much, much less trade, I do not believe.

I am sure there are papers out there that have studied the economy of Middle Earth. Might be a good read!

I don't remember what it said in the books. Maybe you have it backwards. Here is the clip from the movie.
