Thoughts on The Hobbit: The Battle of 5 Armies (Spoilers)

Just got back.
I enjoyed it. But this movie has some issues. None of them are movie breaking back just like for the previous 4 movies (fellowship had none) and last two movies in particular, there are some cringe worthy moments. Thankfully, we don't have any entire scenes that are cringe worthy like the escape from Goblin-Town or the Barrel Riding scene. But Legolas riding the bat and running up the falling stones was awful. There were scenes almost as bad in Two Towers and Return, but they didn't quite feel like they do here where they're trying to up the badass factor. The worst moment in the movie is when the reindeer impales the orcs and elf king decapitates them all at the same time.
Also, I don't think Peter Jackson knows how cavalry charges work.
Characters continuously know information that they shouldn't in this movie. How does Thorin know that Bard slayed the dragon. How does the elf king know that Taurin loves Kili. Also, characters turn up in places randomly. At one point, Gandalf and Bilbo end up in Dale and I was like WTF?
As for that love story, I thought it was fine and sweet. I thought it would have been poetic if they both died but they would never have the balls to go for that.
The Battle itself was OK. It didn't have any Oh shite moments. It was kind of weird. One thing I kept on thinking is why didn't the orcs keep the were-worms around. Those things would have wrecked shite just by themselves.
I found Bilbo's and Thorin's relationship moving. I honestly was sad to see Thorin die and I found the last scene between them touching and I will miss the characters.
Performances were mostly strong. I like most of the dwarfs and I will miss them. Balin and Dwalin were great and Bifir, Kili, and Fili all had me invested in them.
How did Kili recover so quickly from his arrow wound. He was near dead at the end of the last movie and this he is running almost immediately.
Also, this is as much of a continuation of the last movie as you can want. The pacing is off.
That's all I have for now. Dinner is ready.

Agree with all of this.
Also, if you were/are a fan of Beorn, his paratrooper drop in this movie is your only highlight.

I will watch it but I don't think that the Hobbit films are very good.

1) didn't like the awkward humor at the worst moments
2) the eagles entrance should have been way more epic
3) also, I didn't like it when Azog keeps pawning off killing thrain to his henchman. You have been looking for revenge for years and then don't want to kill him?
I'm ok with most everything else though. Also, I think the galadriel scene will trigger epilepsy with some people.

Azog bursting through the ice like that is maybe the most WTF moment ive ever seen in a movie.

If im being totally honest, I thought this was Episode 1 bad.
Im not sure if this was a problem with the theater I was in, but the sound effects were muted almost. They sounded like they were hitting each other with paper swords.
As the battle progressed, the fight just became more and more comical. The two fricking orc-troll things that have the same face, body and clothing seems lazy.
Giant-Bear man jumping from the eagles made me laugh, as did the entire fight with Azog. It seemed like something straight out of looney tunes tbh.
I really wanted to like this movie, cuz LOTR and Tolkien and all. But if im being objective, I hated it.

Desolation was better. But I still enjoyed this one.

Azog being in the movie when he is supposed to already be dead is a serious WTF moment in this movie series.

All of this.
I came close to walking out during the comical battle scenes.

Just saw it.
I'm going to put it very simply
I enjoyed it, it was a good movie to watch. The main problem isn't with the movie itself but rather the trilogy. It shouldn't have been a trilogy. If you split the second movie in half and make movie one and 2 first half one movie, and movie 2 second half and 3rd movie two movies. It would have been great.
This third movie was to much film for too little material. It's hard to get an accurate judgment on it's quality at a first viewing for a movie like this.
I think 3.5/5 stars is what I would get it after my first viewing. It may go up after I see it again on blu ray or go down.
I thought hobbit 1 and 2 were good but not great movies. LOTR was one of my favorite movies ever. Habit not nearly as good.

quote:how would you rate it in comparison to the previous 2? I was never a big LOTR fan. I appreciated it for what it was as far as great filmmaking but I saw each one once and really don't have a desire to have any repeat viewings. as for the hobbit I really did not like the first one at all. I thought the 2nd one was much better and enjoyed it. how will this one fit in?

quote:it's possible. to be honest I almost walked out of the first hobbit. I was literally almost bored to tears and looked at the time and saw I was only and hour in but I toughed it out. that was one of the very few times I almost left a movie. that almost never happens for me
No you didn't.

I rewatched the first two before this came out and I'll say that Desolation was easily the best of the 3. IMO this one was on par with Unexpected Journey

it was exciting and will keep you engaged the whole time. The ending will happen and you will be like it's over?
But as I said
Jackson took a few chapters and tried to make it into one long movie.
It was a battle with set up and close on each site.
For me I liked the first two movie. But I'm a huge middle earth fan. This movie was not as good. Still better than most though.

What trailers were shown?
Also, what format(s) did you see the movie (IMAX, 3D, regular)?
Thanks

nothing I really cared about
They are doing another terminator
Jupiter raising.
Dude about walking across the twin towers.
I don't remember what else
Saw it IMAX 3D. I actually rather see it regular IMAX than 3D. You eventually forget it is in 3D but it really doesn't add that much.
