then again there is Arwen who is approximately 2,680 years older than Aragorn,,,

What gets me is that she is suppose to be the most beautiful of that generation of elves, so why did it take her that long to pair up with someone?

I guess Elrond had her on lock down for over 2,000 years.

The lack of grittiness and blood was overall the biggest issue for me

This was based on a children's book. Expectations were way out of whack for this series as a whole. This is not Lord of the Rings, written for adults. This is meant to be much more whimsical and light-hearted.

Yeah I realize that. I've said the same thing a few times in this thread. I just forget sometimes bc it would've been so much better with just LOTR-level grittiness

haha sure

.. keep in mind 2,700 is still "quite young" for an Elf maid.

She actually spent a good deal of her time in Lorien, home of her mother and Galadriel, and only met Aragorn once as a "child" in Rivendel, before meeting him again as an adult in Lothlorien.

by the way if you like computer games and you're into the actual history and lore of Middle Earth you might want to check this out:

Lord of the Rings online

these guys(turbine) go to great lengths to develop their main story based on the lore from the books, including The Silmarillion and the appendices, while they take liberties with some things for convenience of gameplay, they do a top notch job for the most part handling the canon of the main story. There are tons of scenes like the meetings of Aragorn and Arwen as well as the Gandalf and Aragorn, Aragorn and Frodo having a heart to heart before leaving Rivendel, all played out in this game, and done really well by most peoples standards.

Galadriel is the mother of Elronds now deceased wife,(Celebrian

Technically, Galadriel's daughter/Elrond's wife is not dead. She was attacked by orcs on the way between Rivendell and Lothlorien or vice versa and the experience so harrowed her that she made the trip back across the sea to Valinor, where only elves and bearers of the One Ring can go. Elrond and Galadriel presumably reunite with her when they finally sail to Valinor at the end of Lord of the Rings.

btw, I would like to see that conversation between Elrond and Celebrian when meeting in Valinor when Elrond breaks the news that her only daughter chose her human side, became mortal, will die, and will never make the trip to Valinor to see her mother again.

my expectation is that in many of the greatest of the elves, they were prescient enough to know these things in advance, her mother may well have foreseen the whole LotR story coming.. many of those foreseen events became bits of legend, like that the King of the Nazgul would not die by the hand of a man.

Saw it today on IMAX 3d. I thought it was fun and was a great ride in that format, but it's a perfect example of why these movies should never have been a trilogy.

As I left the theater, I thought it was a fun movie but the more I thought about it, the more disgusted I became, and I've really lost a lot of faith in modern cinema because of it. This story could have been made into two excellent, unforgettable films, or possibly even one. Instead the suits demanded (through much bickering as we all heard reports of) three films. The things they had to do to stretch this very short book made them fun in some ways but wanting in a lot of ways and extremely stupid in other ways. Mostly, it was not a good idea.

They added characters, drew out battles and other situations, concocted numerous connections to the Lotr story just to milk it for every penny they could get. It was forced, and really tiresome in many cases. And, oh my god, the cheesy, formulaic one liners and other hackneyed devices. Clearly, a lot of people who have no real artistic talent had way too much say in creating this story. Usually, I point in the direction of the suits and dumbass actors who think they're brilliant.

And this is the new formula. They did it to Harry Potter. They're doing it to Hunger Games. They did it to this, and this will be the new standard. We won't get the best story that can be made, period. Well get the best story that can be squeezed out into as many parts as they can get away with. Total money grab. Art and storytelling takes a back seat.

Well, art and storytelling is why I watch movies, not to pay the house notes and coke habits of Hollywood suit airhead narcissist douchebags. As such, the repeated practice of squeezing as much life out of everything as is possible, the latest edition of which I watched today, will keep me out of theaters a lot more, and that's sad.

So, fun movie with lots of flashy, blinky lights, but a sad underachievement for something which had enormous potential.

Yeah, this really sucked. Who the hell enjoys this cheesy shite? Why do directors keep adding this crap to movies? Nobody, I promise, wanted to see that crap in this movie.

Dain was such a cartoon character. I find it hard to believe he has a worst temper than Thorin.

Pretty convenient to have a giant arse bell exactly in the middle of the door way in the cave when they needed to knock the rocks down.

I loved LOTR...much like the Star Wars prequels..>I think I could of done without these.

Plot lines and characters that didn't exist in the book were added in and added nothing to the story.

very meh.

I didn't mind the 2 hour battle so much (the dwarven army was pretty bad arse) but it seemed disjointed.

Oh well, its done now. Maybe Ill pick it up on blue ray and see if it gets better.
