It may be that Kate knows about Jack's drinking problem, and she feels responsible, if his death is related to a combination of the fire and the alcoholism.

Could be sort of a smokescreen?
100%
We all thought last season Jack was gonna die in a drunk driving accident.
Now we all think he is gonna die in a house fire.
Awesome show!

my only complaint with last nights episode was the freaking commercials!!
not enough showtime between them
not enough showtime between them

It's Miguel....he's always been jealous that Jack has Rebecca
That Mexican is going to off him and burn the evidence....and then comfort his way into Becca's life

By seasons end, Viola Davis will show up to get the charges dropped and everyone lives happily ever after
Or do they.....

that's an ending no one would see coming but doesn't really fit into the character of the show.
I'm thinking it has something to do with something Kevin and Kate did and given that they are so protective of each other current day, beyond the typical twin stuff.

well, I was partially joking
I think Jack and Kevin have some type of fallout....be it b/c Jack is drunk or just a disagreement that leads to Kevin breaking his leg and missing football....which in turn causes Kevin to blame Jack. This causes Jack to fall off the wagon and sets the house one fire by accident and he's unable to get out.
I just can't tie in where Kate is involved.
ETA: but then that isn't really that out there being they dropped those clues in this episode and Jack's death is supposed to be something you don't see coming

I admit that my mouth was open when I saw the burned house. That was a shocker regardless of the story particularly after seeing that Ziploc bag.
I'm thinking the redhead with Randall could be a friend of Miguel's at the time. I figured Rebecca somehow got Miguel to round up the kids and take them to his house except for Kevin who was out and about with Sophie.
I assume Kevin broke his leg playing football or doing something dumb and the significance of the cast was possibly that Jack signed it.
Maybe the dog is Miguel's.
I have no idea what to think about the fire and Jack's death. We could speculate all day. He was cooking and drinking and fell asleep? Passed out? She was cooking and got a call about Jack and left something on the stove when she went to the hospital? Faulty electrical system?
One thing I don't believe is that he killed himself and set fire to the house. That would be far out of character. He wouldn't do that to his family even in a stupor.
Helluva premier, though. I was glued except the Kate stuff with the singing got a little slow for me.

A theory I was thinking about...
Kate is OBSESSIVE over Jack and the Steelers...
what if Jack is into sports betting and down a lot of money , with ties to his dad and maybe other shady people somewhere down the line...
He asks Kate who he thinks will win between the Steelers and team X.. she picks the wrong team, and he loses the bet and in retaliation due to debts, the mob burns their house down and harms Jack fatally. Or maybe Jack burns it down due to insurance ... Thus her guilt over his death.
She's wearing a steelers shirt when she pulls up so you could assume this happened on a steelers gameday.
This came to me as I was lying in bed this morning.

Another thing to think about is in season 1, we were told that kevin threw his model planes away after jack died. If jack dies in a house fire, how does Kevin still have model planes?

Also is Kevin in the cast saying something?
I just read that last season Kevin didn't have a cast on at the father's funeral. I don't remember if this is true or not, but if it is then I guess Jack didn't die the night of the house fire. Also, was the stuff Rebecca had of Jack's in the baggie burned?

I was wondering about the Steelers shirt. They open with them drunk and fighting with a SB win. I believe the Rams game.
They’ve jumped to the mid 90’s? Is it 95? A fight during the Steelers loss to the cowboys?
I blame Dallas.

And why does Kate blame herself for Jack's death?
Maybe Jack died trying to save her.
Maybe she left a candle lit in her room or left the iron on and it set the house ablaze.
Maybe Jack was getting drunk so Kate left mad and Jack passed out and didn't wake up when the house caught on fire.
Maybe Kate was cooking and left the oven on and the house went up.

She already knew he was dead when she pulled up to the burning house at the end, right?
She didnt seem too shocked by it when she pulled up

Didn't the boys get into a fight after a football game one night and kevin hurt his leg and got pissed at his dad?

Remember that Kate was the one to encourage Jack to go see Rebecca perform. She basically pushed him to go see her. Which started the whole downward spiral of events that led to Jack and Rebecca separating.
I'm thinking like a teenage girl....she likely thinks if she would have never told him to go...they wouldn't have separated....Jack wouldn't have started drinking heavily...and wouldn't have died.
