Question: Was the rocket that started to fire in the hangar before liftoff that Russell had to shutdown, the same one that malfunctioned later in the air, leading to his suicide run?

Obviously the movie is one big clusterfrick of contradictions and based 0% in reality, but I was just curious

maybe, never thought of that. Have you ever seen the original cut of the suicide scene?

Originally Russel was to not be allowed a jet, so he decides to strap a missile on his crop duster and take out the ship.

I shite you not...

I like the fact they used all of their pilots instead of SAMS first.

Why was the attack plan so bad? The ship was supposed to be 15 miles in diameter so why did they think shooting at one side of the ship would do anything.

I never understood how all the ships were taken down once the force fields were removed. These were giant ships with squadrons protecting them. The force fields were only part of the problem.

This thread is as useless as searching for meaning in a Pauly Shore movie.

Like we needed a cable repairman to discern hostile intent of the alien ships.

Makes more sense to me than giving a probably mentally damaged alcoholic keys to an actual jet.

Just saw the movie on tv and always wondered what the deal was with this.

The general guy tells his people to tell everyone how to get those sumbithces down and they all morse code it to other countries. I thought the main thing was infecting the mothership and making her send out the virus to all the smaller ships so their shields would be disabled for a few minutes. By the time the message gets out, the shields should be back up and they are back to square one. Unless, the nuke being set off in the mothership made all that monkey business useless.

Great movie

Wow that would have been ridiculous. But it might have been a little more believable if you think about it. I might take that cut scene over believing that a drunk idiot learned to fly a fighter jet in a matter of hours. Literally he was drunk during the 'crash course'

He wasn't mentally disabled he was just a drunk because nobody believed him about the aliens. Once he was proven right I could see him cleaning up, even though everyone still gave him shite about the aliens for no good reason.

Technically, he wasn't proven right just because aliens did show up.

That's why the scene at the base is funny. Everyone rolls their eyes about the abduction story even though they were contemporaneously being invaded by...aliens.

I guess we could make this an Inception spinning top debate. Ie do you believe he had been abducted?

I go with No and that he was a bit effed in the head.

The biggest question is how did the aliens let Russell get so close to the mother ship. You know when they abducted him they shoved some sort of tracking probe up his arse, that's straight up alien move #1. Then despite monitoring him for years, they suddenly lose track of him after he goes onto the same military base that sends dozens of fighter jets at the ship?

Also, do you think the aliens remembered him as he screamed out, "I'm baaaaaaaaccccckkkkkkkkkk...." You know there had to have been some peanut gallery-type alien screaming, "I knew we should have killed him!!!!"

I think you're not putting enough faith in the world's greatest hero, Russell Casse. He served his country, gets abducted by aliens, has to deal with Andrew Keegan trying to do his cult sex magic on his daughter, has to raise Keanu Reeves' illegitimate half-Mexican son, and when he decides to save the world all the president can say is "good luck", then he immediately calls him a son of a bitch.

I kinda wondered about that myself. Best I can figure is either the force fields were emanating from the mother ship to the others or that as you say the virus was transmitted from the mother ship to the others thus taking out their force fields.

And when they nuked the mother ship it obviously threw some kind of monkey wrench into any of the ships getting their shields back up.

From that point I think the air forces all over the worlds had to fight their way in and take out the ships at the same point that Russell did. You'd think at least a few of them would have failed but I guess not.

Also, I guess some bigger countries might have been able to hit a ship with enough power (ICBM's, cruise missels, etc.?) to do enough damage to bring it down without getting to the ultra vulnerable point.

Didn't he say that he had flown in the Air Force and then been flying crop dusters ever since, or some shite like that?

I fricking love this movie, btw, but one thing that always bugged the frick out of me was that as soon as that blue laser light thing comes on and hits his plane, it should have died and he should've crashed back to earth in short fashion. The laser knocks out power from a fricking underground, top secret, high level military facility, but his plane just bosses through it lickity split.

Also bugs me how him roughing the tip of the laser immediately explodes the entire, 15-mile-wide ship, but whatever...it's still awesome.

Lets just call the ships beam a nuke for the sake of discussion. Did the ships nuke over area 51 come after the mothership was nuked by us? If so, that ship was acting by itself. It would be safe to say that all the other ships over the foreign countries would be blasting them all to hell. Might be a losing battle from there considering how crippled the US already was.

Regardless, I love how the President, General and company just went all out in the desert all willy nilly to meet will smith and goldblum to smoke cigars when literally only a few percent of this world battle was complete. Hey we just found a way to hurt these guys so lets just go hug in the desert while the rest of the US and the world burns
