Also bugs me how him roughing the tip of the laser immediately explodes the entire, 15-mile-wide ship, but whatever...it's still awesome.

I mean, its no thermal exhaust port not much bigger than 2 meters, but I get your point.

This movie is freaking fantastic. Its mindlessly entertaining, complete with really bad puns and one liners, plenty of Goldblum, and the second best kick arse President to ever grace the big screen.

I'm actually looking forward to the sequel. Hope Will Smith realizes he needs to get over himself and be a part of it.

Regardless, I love how the President, General and company just went all out in the desert all willy nilly to meet will smith and goldblum to smoke cigars when literally only a few percent of this world battle was complete. Hey we just found a way to hurt these guys so lets just go hug in the desert while the rest of the US and the world burns

That was just one battle taking place at that time. The U.S. had actually organized a massive coordinated counter offensive where the world forces were attacking every ship at once. It's not unthinkable that with the shields down and the knowledge of how to destroy them (high explosives to the beam transmitter right before it's fired) that by the time they pick up Will and Jeff that everything is just in mop-up mode.

maybe, never thought of that. Have you ever seen the original cut of the suicide scene?

Originally Russel was to not be allowed a jet, so he decides to strap a missile on his crop duster and take out the ship.

I shite you not...

haha, could a biplane even physically fly into the alien ship like that without stalling?

Also it was established they were a hive mind. So when you destroy the mother ship, the other ships lose all coordination. I'm willing to bet the battle was a lot easier going after they lost Big Brother up in the sky.

You can find logical conclusions to every issue with this movie, I promise.

If the controllers could keep track of each and their remaining weapons, why did they say "all missles have been fired" when Kay had one left

Because, as stated in another post, the first cut of the movie had Casse flying a biplane instead of a jet. That's why nobody knew who he was when he shows up to save the day.

Are they still going forward with the sequels?

Considering it's twenty years later, I'm sure it will be Vivica Fox's son grown into the funny black guy role.

According to IMDB, you are correct. Liam Hemsworth will play Whitmore's Son in Law.

Has a 2016 release date

I read this as a direct line from the movie

I dont think we would be in mop up mode though. Although dont they show some sandy people in the end cheering for a downed mini-mothership?

What's amazing is that the mother ship could oversee conquering worlds but yet had no norton or mcafee antivirus / malware detection software....

For realz

One thing that bothers me is that they are able to take the alien spacecraft from Area 51 and fly it straight into the mothership without any sort of challenge. That would be like some random jet flying onto one of our aircraft carriers. Even if an enemy had the exact same jet they would still have to communicate with the carrier and know call signs and stuff like that.

So this super advanced alien race just lets anyone with a craft looking like theirs fly right on in.

Remember it was bi-planes that sunk the mighty Bismarck. German guns rotated too swiftly to adjust to the bi-planes slow speed.

I'm actually shocked it took this long for someone to respond to that comment.

I agree, but when the shite goes down, this is the guy I want leading the country.
