Moonlight wasn't very good for a Best Picture winner

Watched it last night since it won Best Picture, and in typical Hollywood fashion, they got this one wrong. The movie was okay, and the acting, directing, and cinematography were all very good; but overall it was just very forgettable.

Essentially it's a black version of Broke Back Mountain. One thing I will say I did enjoy was the use of orchestral music throughout to really drive home the mood during certain scenes.

My rankings of the ones I have seen:
1. Manchester by the Sea
2. La La Land
3. Hacksaw Ridge
4. Hell or High Water
5. Moonlight
6. Arrival

Anyone else seen it? If so, what are your thoughts?

Glad I saw this. I won't be watching.

It wasn't a very good year for movies as a whole, so it's fitting.

Watch Lion. Subtitles to start the movie but I hardly noticed. Great true story.

I did not like La La land, am not watching black broke back, the rest of the movies in your list were pretty damn GOOD . IMHO

It was Oscar bait. (Plus they had to make up for the "whitewash" from the past couple of years.) It is what it is.

Yeah Fences or Moonlight was going to win it.

Moonlight had the edge because it added gayness to the pot.

Drug addiction movies are always a tough out, add in black main character and abuse because gay? That's a tough trifecta for other films to overcome.

Nothing Denzel could have done.

Moonlight became the first Best Picture winner with an all black cast...

(I mean we saw this a year ago - about 10 minutes after last year's Oscars protests...most people on this board knew how this was going to shake down this year.)

The first LGBT film to win the award...

And, the second lowest grossing film of all time.

So file this under The Artist...a movie people might see once but most will probably never ever see it.

It will be so forgotten.

Listened to a podcast of the movie industry yesterday and numerous critics said it was nowhere near the best picture but we all know why it won. They are proving a point.

Pretty much my thought. Everyone will remember the movie they thought won and not the one that actually did.

Saw Manchester by the Sea last night and only surprise of the movie was Matthew Broderick still acting in movies. It was well done and Affleck was great but I thought Nocturnal Animals was much more enjoyable.

I heard the orchestral music was fantastic mixed with the setting... I saw the swimming scene on TV the other day and it was a beautiful piece of filmmaking. But I also have little desire to see the movie and I probably won't.

Moonlight was good.

La La Land was an experience.

Check the other thread that you avoided so that you could start this one. It's filled with glowing reviews.

Any other rules you want us to follow since you're the acting forum police for this evening?

And the other thread really isn't filled with glowing reviews. It's mostly a mess.

As I said in the other thread I thought it was great. If anyone is not seeing it because they think it will be SJW liberal BS you're very wrong. It's not that at all.

Yea they made up for a whitewash by giving Casey Affleck the Oscar over Denzel Washington

You're wasting your time. A good segment of this board thinks Best Picture should be awarded to a flag waving war movie every year.

I didn't see Fences but the field must have been pretty bad that Casey won.

That's just...I don't even know what to say. I'm sure someone brooding and silent has won a best actor before...maybe.

But there's understated and then there is what that movie was. Looking morose the entire film and mumbling isn't range.

Based on the movies it was competing with it was worthy of the award along with about 3 others. I thought it was really good, not great. However I don't think any of the movies in contention make my "great" list. The It wasn't a very strong year overall
