Yeah Fences or Moonlight was going to win it.

Moonlight had the edge because it added gayness to the pot.

Drug addiction movies are always a tough out, add in black main character and abuse because gay? That's a tough trifecta for other films to overcome.

Nothing Denzel could have done.

Fences had no shot at winning

The only other movie that could have won was the whitest movie of the year, and still took home 6 oscars

The kid wasn't a drug addict. Dont wanna give away any spoilers but the abuse wasn't based on him being gay. But why should you know all that since you didn't actually see the movie...

Yep, had to get that 2% of 12% of the population covered!

Essentially it's a black version of Broke Back Mountain
outside of the use of homosexuality and the general themes of loneliness...not really

Moonlight is more about feeling isolation, not having proper guidance, how our environment shapes our exteriors, whereas Brokeback is more of a tragedy about love.

blackness has zero to do with the movie and I think it does it a disservice to call it the "black version" of anything. It's a unique story with themes that people from any walk of life can identify with, unless someone's blind hatred/ignorance/bigotry simply won't allow it. But that's their own fault.

It's actually pretty pathetic the amount of unjustified hate it's getting, especially on this board.

If you don't like the narrative, fine. you didn't like it. But the movie is in no way a political movie trying to spread an agenda. It's giving an account of one person's life from childhood to adulthood and letting the audience examine it.

It's funny that so many are against seeing the film because of the gay main character... when that gay character is possibly the least "gay" homosexual portrayals on film. And I'm not referring to the masculinity or femininity of the character/actors. You'd have to see the film to fully understand what I'm trying to get across. It's not like you're watching Birdcage.

Yeah, the film is at no point preachy. I am not a huge fan of the movie because the story just wasn't that interesting to me. It did a lot of great things with the camera work and I can appreciate how raw it was and I guess original but if the story ultimately doesn't interest me or pull me in, I can't get behind it. This is a classic example where you have to explain why it is good or what makes it the best picture instead of the movie doing it for you.

Out of the ones I saw:

1. Hell or High Water
2. Manchester by the Sea
3. Arrival
4. La La Land

Haven't seen Hacksaw Ridge or Moonlight. Want to watch both though.

Out of the entire list, Arrival was the most pleasant surprise. That is a great movie.

I can see that. Slice of life movies can be very hit or miss when it comes to individual enjoyment. Sometimes I like them, sometimes I walk out thinking, "nothing really happened in that movie."

I wouldn't argue with Hell or High Water or Manchester by the Sea winning Best Picture either. I loved Hacksaw Ridge, but the action was a little comic booky in places.

Moonlight was much better than Brokeback, which I couldn't even finish watching.

I totally agree with you here, which is why I made a point to sit down and watch it so I could judge for myself. And like I said, it wasn't a bad movie at all but it didn't wow me like a Best Picture should have, and compared to some of the others I've seen, it was forgettable.

I appreciate the directing, cinematography, and some aspects of the movie. I can certainly appreciate a film as a whole.

For actors, they both did very well. Movie was beautiful, IMO

i'm pretty good with your ranking if you toss out hacksaw ridge completely, and move arrival into #2 and la la land #1.

moonlight is a really good movie, but inferior to 3, if not 4, of the movies you have listed. i'm not going to give a film added importance just because it's created by black people and about black people, even though everyone saw this coming a mile away. it certainly deserved its nominations, but it was inferior on just about every level to la la land specifically.

and i'm in complete agreement with you on the score. it was fantastic, and yet, still second best to la la land (the academy got this one right).
