I have seen 1 and a half seasons of Mad Men. Then I started watching other shows like Breaking Bad, Arrested Development, The Wire.

I am currently on season 4 of BB
and season 2 of The Wire

Why all the love for Mad Men?
It was okay but I would rather watch other shows.

Of the most hyped shows on this board, Mad Men is by far the weakest. But it's not just this board, it kills at the Emmy's as well and I don't get the love.

I want to care about Mad Men more than I do because I like Don, Roger, Pete, Peggy, and Lane. Maybe it's more of a testament to the actors than the writers, but watching the season play out is just so uninteresting.

Well those other three shows are three of the greatest shows ever. I love Mad Men. But would put it behind those other three.

The reasons shows like Mad Men and Breaking Bad get such good reviews is because they appeal to the masses. You can watch them on a basic level and just care about the main plot line but a friend of mine who is a psychologist deeply inspects the character study of characters in the shows such as Betty Draper from Mad Men and Gus from Breaking Bad. They make you care about characters that you'd never think you'd care about. You wouldn't think you'd care about a cheating husband like Don Draper or a meth dealer like Walt White, but a lot of people do.

To me this is one of the geniuses of this show. By today's standards, Don is a dog. But somehow, you find yourself cheering for him. When he and Betty split up, and Don is confessing, you know in the back of your mind you should hate Don for putting his family thru all this, yet I found myself hating Betty more for stealing the keys to his desk.

I don't care about him, and I don't like Mad Men.

What does this say about me?

Mad Men is a different animal than those shows. Most of the drama is individual to each character. There is no single propulsive goal that drives the narrative.

It is open ended and that can be tough to get into. Treme is a similar style that many people don't like because its "boring"

And there is nothing wrong with that opinion

I've watched a decent bit of BB, but I've never even sort of thought of it as appointment television. I only watch it because its on netflix.

MadMen on the other hand, I go to great lengths to make sure I am able to watch every Sunday, and I've watched whole seasons twice because I just get hooked.

Different strokes I guess.

I was late to the Mad Men party because I wasn't sure if I'd like the premise. I absolutely love the show. IMO it's well-written and well-acted which goes a long way these days. I like the nostalgic feel.

That said, it's not for everyone. I have friends whose opinion I respect when it comes to movies and TV that don't care for it. Especially the pace of the show.

It's a really good, and perfectly executed show.

As for as dramas... I'd def. say it's in my top 5. I really like this show, but it takes a little bit to get into it.
