Just watched “2001 A Space Odyssey” for the first time. I didn’t get it

Ok, the monolith made the cave more aware, started using weapons.
Then it was found on the moon.
Then Hal goes haywire, starts killing everyone. Did he go haywire because the monolith was near?
Then the last scene, I have zero concept what happened.
Please explain!

The Monolith gives humanity an evolutional nudge. It would be easier to ask you to watch the sequel, 2010: The Year We Make Contact, than try to explain this masterpiece. I will say Hal's programming was corrupted which made it go off the rails.

It's hard to give even a simple explanation. About Hal, you saw the apes learn to use basic tools after they encountered the monolith. Think of Hal, or AI, being a tool so advanced that it overtakes man.

Remember this movie came out before we ever actually made it to the moon.
Imagine the mind of the viewer in the mid 1960s compared to what we get generally today. This movie was mind blowing at the time. I don’t think there was anything else like it in terms of science fiction that had the production value and actually did do it’s homework on a fair amount of the physics of space in the movie.
ETA: it’s a great movie. It is not exactly a fun movie

I read the books long ago: 2001, 2010, 2061, and 3001
I remember when the crew went somewhere in the ship to discuss the antenna being actually functional, where HAL couldn't hear them, HAL could still see them and read their lips. They discussed turning HAL off.
HAL has a prime directive to complete his mission and not tell the crew the true mission, but if the crew is planning on turning him off then the only logical step is to kill the crew and complete its mission.
I don't remember the monoliths giving knowledge. I thought they were to send a signal to whatever space higher power that humans had evolved enough to 1. Notice objects 2. Advance enough to get to the dark side of their moon and locate another monolith underground. 3. Reach one floating around Saturn... at which point the space higher power would make contact. (It was changed to Jupiter in the movie)

Can you imagine seeing this in the theater when it first came out April 2, 1968? What a year. Rosemary's Baby, Once Upon a Time in the West, Night of the Living Dead, Planet of the Apes, Bullitt, White Album, Music From Big Pink, Electric Ladyland, Beggars Banquet, Village Green Preservation Society, Astral Weeks. And, kick as clothing.

Also from the Book 2010, HAL was designed to be incapable of lying. But on the mission, he was not to tell Dave and Frank what the true mission was, in effect lying to them. This contradiction caused HAL to go off the rails

My Crude take... The computer represents our efforts to self-evolve (and the subsequent glitch being representative of our self destructive tendency...) verses outside influence shaping our evolution...

This has always been my take on the meaning of the monoliths as well.

I hated the film when I saw it for the first time when I was a teenager.
Now I just Marvel at it. There's nothing else ever made that looks and feels like that film.
