I saw Force Awakens there and it was fantastic. Every time we hit the button the guy was there to take the order.

Sucks they dropped the ball today.

Dude. It is fricking Star Wars. They could release it Christmas Morning or Easter Sunday and it would break all records.

Most? I'd love to know who the folks in the movie business are (other than the local Movie Tavern folks) who thought that Star Wars wouldn't break every December record by huge margins.

You've been absent from the internet for a year if you didn't know that this film was going to drub every record on the books.

That sucks. I've only been once and it was tolerable but I could not imagine going with kids too.

They are definitely a second rate Alamo Drafthouse. I hear how shitty that place is all the time.

Damn. That sounds like a horrendous experience. Girlfriend and I have been 4 times. The first two times the service was atrocious. I wrote a pretty long email to the theater owners complaining about it. The next two times the experience was very good.

I don't know. Seems like a crap shoot with the wait staff but I'll always go back for the seat comfort and being able to reserve my seats.

I have zero desire to go to a movie theatre that serves meals. And not because this is the 1,000th horror story I've heard about these places. I want to watch a movie, not have shrimp fried rice and see a few frames between bites. I can eat before or after my movie. Eating while watching just doesn't strike me as a theatre experience I want to have.

So you've never been, don't want to go, and would never go to a movie theater like this?

Yeah, your opinion counts for dick.

Haven't read all of the responses yet, so I apologize if this is redundant to what any others have said.

But I had to shoot straight with you on this little number after reading it.

quote:

 "projectionist" was on vacation

Complete bullshite, and he is trying to take advantage of you. Sorry, this a little long.

First, I'll address his statement.

A) Not sure how many houses they have, but there are at least 6 people trained to fully run every aspect of the projectors in anything bigger than an 16, 4 in an 8, 3 in a 6, and 2 in a 1. It's too dangerous not to.

B) As busy as they knew this weekend would be. I mean, Christmas is literally THE SINGLE BIGGEST DAY OF THE YEAR. They don't let their only supposed employee trained on the projectors out of town, not when the slowest month of the year is 6 days away.

A Christmas weekend is the busiest weekend of the year. A Christmas, and Christmas weekend, where a new Star Wars, starring the original cast for the first time in 30 years, is less than 10 days old? Yeah....the busiest weekend of the millenia. They absolutely had someone there at all hours who could work the projectors. Our doors were never open without someone who could run them.

C) A bulb bursting and not being fixed immediately can be disastrous for a company. Especially if it runs for awhile with the bulb blown. Modern cinema projectors cost in the neighborhood of 300k...for a cheaper one. There are a host of other issues that could go wrong. Trust me, there was someone there who could focus it. I was never really trained on them, but could still focus one. Too add to my last sentence in A here. It's a major fire hazard, these suckers run HOT. Not having someone on hand creates a huge risk of burning the place down if something goes wrong with one, and trust me, they can be finicky beasts sometimes.

D) It's too convenient an excuse. If there truly wasnt a projectionist there, then a manager trained on it was. My guess, since you mentioned issues with service. Is that they were having problems back of house. Sounds like the servers were stalling for the kitchen. The manager who was trained on the projector couldn't get away from dealing with it, and when/if he did, he was too lazy to walk upstairs and focus it.

Now that his excuse is fully destroyed, here is where he is trying to take advantage of you.

They don't make more than $0.50 a ticket, closer to $0.15 a ticket if they are an independent. They make 100% of their profits from food. Of course he gave you movie passes, they don't make money from that anyway, but he still gets you back in to buy more food. They make money off of you twice. Despite giving you incredibly shitty service.

If I were you, I would go back and ask for a free meal for the next time you return. Make sure the GM is there to talk to. If you did talk to the GM, then you have an even bigger case. Every GM is fully trained on literally every single job in a theater. Even independents.

Source: Worked at AMC as a concessionist, doorman, and usher. As well as at Carmike as a manager.

To give you an idea, the AMC I worked at was a 24 house in Hampton, VA. I was there twice between 03 and 05. They averaged roughly 30,000 people on Christmas Day every year, and that was without a movie even CLOSE to what Star Wars: TFA is. Forget close, not even close to a fourth of what it is.

TLDR: They had someone who could focus it on hand, and he is trying to make more money off of you through their shitty service.

Yes and no. Being in a similar business shite like this absolutely does happen. Personally, I would have stocked as much as possibly could hold with back up suppliers that I could just call on. That being said, it really was pretty damn big and might not be enough. That's when I'd go in very early and see what I could get from Sam's Club

Uh, not even close. Within 5 minutes of the "buy now" ticket being activated on Internet sites, every single one selling tickets crashed.

They knew, and they knew months before they make the work schedule. Plus, see my post above.

Christmas Day is the single biggest day of the year for the number of people to walk through the door. A Christmas weekend is the single biggest weekend of the year for people to walk through the door.

I'm not even putting Star Wars into the equation for that last paragraph.

Either imbeciles with IQs under 40 run that place, or they are lying.

I never said Christmas day itself wasn't big. I am simply saying that Star Wars is exceeding its expectations by quite a bit and its possible that it caught some off guard.

I went to the Movie Tavern in BR to see Star Wars, and the service/food was unbelievably awful. Don't plan on going back.

Theatre was grossly understaffed, and that place is a clusterfrick. Imagine McDonald's quality workers running a dinner and a movie joint.

I've been to Alamo draft house in Houston m and had none of those problems. I'm sure the location caused a bit of a difference in the workers, but their whole design and setup was 10x better than movie tavern. Movie tavern feels like a cheap, poor man's rip off of Alamo.

Were you talking about stock on hand and service time issues, or the projectionist thing as well?

Stock on hand issues in a theater designed to be a full restaurant, I would probably agree for most items outside of drinks. Especially tea and fountains drinks, those should never run out. If they do, fire the inventory manager.

You can only hold so much food on hand, and if 1/2 the place orders the same food item. Such as a hamburger, or a pizza. You either run low on supplies, or out, and cook times are horrendous.

For example.

The minimum cook time for any pizza not microwaved, and made from scratch, is around 7 or 8 minutes in a 500 degree oven. Depending on style of oven, and several other factors. You can only cook so many at once, and you can only have so much dough prepped beforehand. It takes hours for the dough to rise correctly.

Would make it rough even if they were prepared back of house for a huge Star Wars weekend.

My biggest issue was with the projectionist thing.

Can anyone tell me how many houses they have?

I was only defending them on the stock on hand issues that purplehaze mentioned. I can see how certain things might run out if they weren't prepared for a larger than normal day.

Agree completely that the projectionist issue in the OP is horseshite and was a complete lie made up to cover that theaters arse.

The service issue sounded pretty bad too. I can excuse slow service on a busy day for the most part but what was described sounded like it was way more than a slow kitchen.

I guess I should have been a bit more clear on what all I was excusing.

If they are paid hourly, it was management using them to cover the kitchen.

If they are tipped, then I have no idea. But management is also at fault.

Regardless, I need to go interview for the GM position in that joint.

I like Movie Tavern.

Big arse seats that you can pick in advance, IPAs at my beck and call, and a huge selection of bar food available.

Zero cares about the obligatory food server flashing in front of me during a movie.

Then they sucked at their job. Anyone with half a brain could tell you Star Wars would be bigger than everything on that December release list.
