Koba was driven by the mistrust/hatred that humans instilled in him though. You understand where his hatred is fueled from but he drags everyone into it with him and it also makes you wonder if the humans would have let them be if he hadn't attacked. With the settlement reaching outside help, how many more people would have come with the intense mistrust/hatred towards the apes like Carver?

I liked it but I guess I need to rewatch it.

I was in a packed theater full of bad kids and talky people.
I feel like I missed some dialogue.

Always a shame when the people in the theatre are less civilized than the apes on the screen.

I like how the movie started and ended with a close-up of Caesar's eyes.

Good movie.

It was like they included elements from Conquest of Planet of the Apes and even Beneath the Planet of the Apes (the bomb = C4).

Did they ever say Caesar's son's name? The old one and the young one? Is Blue Eyes his real name? Maybe the young one is Cornelius?

There has to be a Cornelius some time.

So I guess the next movie has to be related to Battle for the Planet of the Apes. Humans and apes living in harmony.

I wonder if they will tie in that lost space ship from the first movie, and when they are going to bring them back in the 3rd movie on this saga.

All I have to say is the apes have to progress a lot before they get to where they are supposed to be technologically. I think this movie was a set up for Blue Eyes being the new Caesar/lead or maybe even Caesar's youngest. The war will be long.

I also wanted to add that this movie felt like a good old-fashioned Cowboys vs Indians Western. I loved that element!

I thought the film would go in a few different directions than it did. I figured the guy that shot Ash would be sorry and apologize to Rocket. I also thought Rockey would take down Koba in the end. I really liked that Rocket, no matter what stuck with what Caesar would have wanted.

I imagine the next one might be "planet of the apes"

Maybe a big leap forward in time

Was there a trailer after the credits? Mrs. Sheep is carrying Baby Sheep and REALLY had to leave as soon as it was over.

No after credits scene. Supposedly there is some audio, but nothing significant.

he's not "pure evil"

he's not trusting and had legitimate concerns that were backed up by the actions of the humans (stocking up arsenal)

the guy from oz was close to being as bad...he just wasn't given the opportunity to spark the conflict

now, was his transition from concerned/un-trusting actor to maniacal dictator rushed? yes. there were some issues with convenient shifts or stupidity to rush the story. it wasn't a perfect movie but it was a really, really good summer movie

I think Koba is driven to pure evil. By the end of the movie he ends up shooting other apes.

The wipe them out thing was stupid. even at survival rate of 1 in 500, that still means 10-20 million humans, based on 5 billion people. Figure more deaths due to disease etc. But still. Concentrate as many as you can in a few areas. Already have the technical knowledge. Apes don't have that and won't on their own for some time. Not every group has a Ceasar who was raised and trained by humans. So take some time, get civilization going again, and then start wiping them out or reducing their population.

You aren't thinking things though, and you are taking a lot of big steps for granted.

You aren't really thinking of the fallout of a pandemic like that. What scares administrations about pandemic flus isn't the direct death toll of it. Its the complete societal collapse that occurs.

And a death rate of 500 to 1 is more lethal than fricking Ebola. And its super contagious.

20 million humans that survive the virus means that on the planet there is one person for every 7,500,000 square kilometers.

To put that in perspective, that is larger than all states Gulf Coast, INCLUDING Texas, combined.

Oh, and multiply that area by three.

On average, one person for all that area.

Now where are these people concentrating exactly?

Also factor in that people aren't evenly distributed on the planet. They are concentrated in cities that can't hope to sustain themselves, that depend on a national logistics network to run. And as resources run scarce, they will turn on each other to fend off starvation.

Between the virus, starvation, and murder its not a surprise to wonder if they are the only ones left. That beleaguered group of humans were probably the only ones left in all of California.

Am I the only one that thought the ending was building up to the extermination of the whole group of apes?

You have the apes loyal to one who is sympathetic to humans and doesn't want to exterminate them, and a touching moment with his family and friends....I just expected to start hearing a bomber in the distance that entire last scene.

I think we know the apes prevail. Hence, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes"

Right.

So a movement taking out apes that is pacifist in nature would be a grim way to move in that direction.

The only roadblock is that we don't really know if there are other colonies of intelligent apes.

Maybe. I think the next one will go into the future a little bit. We just got a glimpse of a small portion of the day in the life of this world. Do the apes steal enough fire power to to capture all the humans? The apes will probably move to a new location and the humans will probably "wipe themselves out". We'll see.

Yeah, the next one will be after the reign of Caesar and into more mixed bag of 1) Ape society and 2) mistreatment of humans.

They have to push it into the future to make it anything that removed from humans having a claim to any part of the top species.

Maybe 2 generations.

That could mean that that flight, when it returns, will see a world completely different.

Just got back, my thoughts:

Very good. I'm not sure if I liked the experience more than Edge of Tomorrow, but it was probably the better film. But it is a different movie with different goes. Winter Soldier, Apes, and EoT are still my favorite films of the year (in that order), and out of those I think the film with the most depth is probably Apes. It really was a fantastic movie with a ton of subtext and great production values.

The film does two things really well:

1) Intensity. I don't think I've seen a movie that keeps things that tense for that length of time. I felt like the entire film was resting on the head of a needle just waiting for everything to topple. Even when things were settled, you just knew something could set everything off. And it often did. But just the anxiety you could feel if you just let go was great.

2) Character. With another successful film, Caeser could be an all-time great character. I mean, they have to go that direction. I wouldn't want them to jump all the way to Planet and forget Caeser's story. he's a magnificent character and he needs a proper close, probably a sacrifice of some sort.

The movie also balanced morality well and showed the good and bad of both sides. It got a little cliche' with Koba, but I think the idea is that although they are advanced, they still have primal urges, so his motivations become extremely simple. Well done there.

Someone else said Shakespearean in this thread, and that's an apt direction.

The only faults are that we need a little more of the human side, just a tad. Or at least more of the interaction with the apes when things were better.

I also think the end was a slight cop out when Caeser said "Humans would not forgive." That's not necessarily true if he thought Malcolm was so honorable. I think there was a missed chance there.
