I would actually split it up into types/where powers come from:

Aliens and Celestials (Superman, Thor, etc.)
Super-Humans (Batman, Moon Knight)
Altered Humans (Spider-Man, Flash, Cap)
Mutants (Wolverine, Magneto, etc.)

Magics are spread out. Dr. Strange is technically an Altered Human.

That way you don't get a Hawkeye vs. Superman in round 1. The best of each go up against each other.

Not to be a douche, but all of these are god-tier. Unless you aren't counting Dr. Doom's theft of the Beyonder's powers or Nova with the Worldmind.

I wouldn't count either of those because subjectively those moments don't seem in character with the overall characters of Dr Doom and Nova. Those were unsustainable/temporary situations for a story line.

And the Hulk and Apocalypse are pretty much god-tier in some iterations.

They are. We need a ruling from the group. The hulk especially ranges in his powers from powerful but eminently beatable to unbeatable in some iterations. I'm not sure I can distinguish what makes sense to call his "normal"

I would limit the participants to the title characters of monthly books or team members of a team-oriented book. This would eliminate the super-powerful minor characters that are little more than plot devices.

You go with the most classic and longest running iteration of the character. Therefore, beatable Hulk.

That also means...weak Iceman.

That's kind of subjective. Do we label them

Iceman (weak version) vs. Superman (moderate version)?

That would get crazy. I say we just name them and let the posters argue and duke it out over the versions when they vote. It'll make it more fun and less arbitrary on the outset.

ETA: Should have read the rest of the thread first.

Eh, you just say "Iceman." Most people's view of Iceman is fairly weak. It's only recently that he's been...more creative and powerful.

Classic Hulk is beatable...and casual nerds aren't going to know the difference between red, green, and grey. Or even Skaar level of Hulk.

BTW,

This will easily be the nerdiest thing this board's ever done. Let's all just admit that and be at peace.

I don't know.

It definitely will be as a collective, but there are some pretty nerdy threads on here.

That's my point. Limiting their histories limits the knowledge that can be dropped on us. It limits the arguments.

If everyone is going to vote what they know anyway, then limiting the characters to the most widely known form is redundant.

We might as well make it fun and try swaying the votes by going full nerd with this bracket.

I say let the voter interpret the version leaving it up to others to sway voters with creative arguments.

Challenge accepted!

I just think superhero throwdowns are beyond most other items. GoT threads come close though.
