Depends on your taste but I would always recommend Kurosawa. If you quiet, thoughtful science fiction films Andry Tarkovsky is superb. Truffaut and Jean Luc-Goddard can be great (I'm not a big French New Wave fan either). Jean-Pierre Melville is also fantastic. When it comes to more modern stuff, Wong Kar Wai all the way. Jeunet for Delicatessen, City of Lost Children and Amelie.

Bergman is just plain different, and although I'm not the biggest Bergman fan, he's usually well known enough to get onto these lists. And I actually really like Wild Strawberries. Different strokes I guess (Although Kurosawa did a superior version with Ikiru).

I was going through lists today searching for a movie I havn't seen yet. And I went with a sci fi movie because I hadn't seen one in a while.
Anyways that was one of the best movies I've ever seen. Thankyou JPLSU1981

I love Bergman, but I think it's more of a mentality I have. I don't enjoy the French New Wave, but I like the kind of spartan and depressing filmmaking of the very Scandanavian Bergman.

Among modern directors, I think there is nothing more "important" than Dogme95. It's just a completely new way of making films. That said, I find them utterly unwatchable. Even Festen.

Am I the only person here who hates this?

I wouldn't say I hate it, but was only moderately entertained by it. The list would have to be pretty long before I include it as a favorite. I think it is a shame that Gump won the Oscar over Shawshank and Pulp Fiction. Then again, I rarely agree with the Academy.

Braveheart hasn't aged well, I figured Gladiator would far outshine it

wow, I think its the opposite. It is for me anyway. I think Braveheart has aged fine, outside if the opening battle sceene, Galditor is a pile of dung IMO, and I really liked it the first time I saw it.

I agree with this. Braveheart isn't a bad movie at all (better than Gladiator most assuredly) just not a classic Ben-Hur/Spartacus type.

Gladiator comes up often and there's always a lot of people who love it.

Gladiator is terrible, IMO. And Braveheart hasn't aged very well.

Update:

We're up to 89 movies with 3 votes or more, 11 more of the 2 or 1 voters to get into the 3 vote range and every movie will have 3 votes. Otherwise, 11 spots for random 2-voted movies.

328 unique movies listed.

The Number 1 spot continues to be in flux since using IMDB's modified formula.

If you want to write a small-piece and your name is not on the list (1st post in thread) let me know.

I'm not going back through all of these, but has anyone mentioned Rocky Horror? It is not a good movie, but had such a following I thought someone would mention it.
