The club has to be somewhat exclusive.

Ben Affleck
-name recognition
-face recognition
-lead actor. i think this is important. i love morgan freeman and kevin spacey, but i dont think they are A lister bc they dont star in movies-- or in good ones, at least. they play supporting roles, and great ones at that. but they dont carry the movie. an A lister is someone who gets a studio wet at the thought of having Leo in their summer blockbuster. an A lister is a first piece to the puzzle who you build around.
-previous movie success

Good list. I would replace Mel Gibson with Ben Affleck.
Also, where's Daniel Day Lewis? He may not be a mainstream celebrity, but the dude is the best actor in the world and could take a shite on camera and win an Oscar... and he'd probably deserve it too.

This is basically the definition of an A lister. Talent has nothing to do with it.

Travolta clearly once was an A list actor. When you consider his career as a whole it is impressive if not legendary. There was a window around the SNF release where he was probably the #1 star in the world. Falling completely off the map, struggling along with movies like "look who's talking" and then being reborn with "pulp fiction" made his rise from the ashes more impressive because he had gone from A lister to an object of mockery.
I think the wheel has pretty well turned on that once again FWIW. Between his weird behavior at nationally televised award ceremonies and his habit of molesting male masseuses he seems to be more than eccentric

Interesting thread that I don't have time to discuss right now. But I have to say that I disagree about Travolta, regardless of some of the crap he's put out. He, arguably, meets all of your criteria if you look at his entire career. He hasn't done anything big lately, but that doesn't equal irrelevance.
And, looking at some of the women on your "B" list, I think you're selling some of them way short. Especially Amy Adams Emma Stone. The only "rap" against them is that, perhaps, they haven't been around quite long enough. But I assure you, they're on the "A list" for casting directors.

Yeah, your list is lacking the most A-List actor on the planet right now
Posted on 3/17/15 at 7:43 am to Indigold
Travolta is not A list anymore ... He once was, but when i think of A list i think of relevance, what they demand and roles they get.
Very few but:
Leo, George, Brad, Mark W., Denzel, Robert Downey Jr., Tom Cruise, Affleck, Gosling, Damon, Matt M., Daniel Craig are all floating in what i consider A list territory.

This is how I feel as well. He doesn't seem to be nearly as consistent as an A-list actor should be.

Where is Channing Tatum, Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale?
To me A-list just means they are recognizable stars that make big budget movies.

He's been in some of the highest grossing films in recent history and was nominated for an Oscar for acting in blackface. People all over the world know Tony Stark. I'd say he's A list.

B list------
John Travolta
James Franco
Hugh Jackman
Nicolas Cage
Keanu Reeves
Ben Affleck
The frick? Franco is about as versatile as they come, has name and face recognition, a (so far) pretty impressive filmography, is currently very relevant, and by the end of his career could very easily be a legend if he continues to act. Maybe Dave Franco is who you meant to put on there.
And Jackman is also about as versatile as they come, from singing and comedy to badassery, from broadway to film, he has more range than half the guys you have in the A List, a ton of name and face rec, massive relevance, and a career filmography that is growing. He will almost undoubtedly be a legend as he continues his career.
Also, how the hell will Matt Damon be a legend but Ben Affleck won't be? I'd argue Affleck has more name rec, face rec, and current relevance than Damon and is at least on par or close with versatility. His filmography is garbage comparatively, though.
Also, frick you, I'm putting Keanu Reeves in the A List. Because unlike this guy:
I am afraid of John Wick.
