When he was with the Star Whitlock was a must read. He did write things most did not agree with but he was bringing attention to a subject. I think he is very good at being an Opinion writer. He does not claim to be a unbiased person, never has never will.

I also think Simmons is a good writer, just a notch below Whitlock. The two writers who I think are definitely in it for themselves and are just unbearable are Lupica and Ryan. I have never liked their style or points.

It is a mistake to consider Simmons future will be a reflection of his past

Simmons has become an Exec Prod in Hollywood. The game has changed for him.

He can do his own podcast (and own it), continue to Produce TV and movies (and own his work) and pick and choose his writing spots

Bill Simmons has more juice right now the Dan Patrick did when he left ESPN, and Dan did just fine. I think Bill has a bright future ahead of him as an independent.

He lives in LA and has a good friend in Adam Carolla, who owns the world's most downloaded podcast ever. They'd be in cahoots in no time, and Simmons would have complete freedom to do and say whatever he pleases; Grantland would continue and probably even get better and more honest. Carolla proved that you can succeed and be rich on your own pirate ship.

I have not read any of his novels in a long time. I just think his writing in sports page is not great. But I know a ton of people enjoy his writing.

The one writer who I liked more than most was Bill Rhoden. He just seemed very blunt and very short to the point when I began reading some of his stuff.

Another writer who I like is Woody Paige, his tv antics aside, he can write a good article.

I'd be willing to put up with a lot of corporate BS for $5M a year to run a mediocre website, write a column every so often, and record podcasts.

Grantland is not mediocre, even if you don't like Simmons the website is great.

Also whoever said Whitlock is better than Simmons..

Whitlock is a race baiting tard.

I never claimed his problem is being "biased". I want my opinion writers to have opinions. I accused him of having a bloated ego and everything he writes is in service to said ego. He also is not a real nimble thinker. He's shrill, bombastic, and not nearly as smart as he thinks he is. A lethal combination for crappy writing.

I do wonder if Grantland and 30 for 30 can continue as independent projects. They're basically like the Weinstein brothers' Oscar bait films. They're prestige projects that a larger organization wants to be associated with because educated opinion leaders like them even though they lose money.

He was back wednesday. And so far all they've done is release NBA previews with he and jalen that were filmed pre suspension. The previews have been excellent, but it's interesting that he didn't do a podcast with cousin sal on this weekends games to release on Wednesday, and he didn't do his weekly Friday picks column even through he's back.

He's obviously still pissed about the suspension and is using the previews as a way to fulfill the minimum terms of his contract. It's not really worth noting right now, but if on Monday there's no new bs report then the situation is officially beyond "forgive and forget."

think ESPN is the only place Simmons can be Simmons

I would agree. Their resources are unmatched. Fox, NBCSN would be silly moves for a forward thinker like Simmons. They want to be ESPN. It ain't gonna happen

I do think if SBNation has reasonable $$ to pay him and some key writers, they make a lot of sense. He's basically the spirit animal of that site and would have freedom to do whatever he wants. And the parent company has experience building around personalities with Vox, which is basically news Grantland. He'd lose access and unparalled platform, but all the BS that comes with working for a corporate monolith

He can easily find a partner for the sports documentaries- Netflix could be an easy option.

Leaving comes down to how much risk does he want. Is he willing to take a pay cut? Does he think his fans will stay with him?

i agree with this

however, his ego is justified re: NBA

so, i made a BS compromise about 1.5 years ago: i'll just engage in his NBA product and ignore the rest

it's worked out very well
