I think Simmons is far better as an aggregator of talent than as a talent himself. Grantland and 30 for 30 are his babies, and they are the two best things ESPN has done in the past decade.
How did he acquire the clout to do 30 for 30 and Grantland?
Not because nobody was reading him. In fact, he was the most widely read sports columnist in the country, and probably still is. People say he's talentless because he doesn't write ornate sentences. Meh. He's a plenty talented writer.

So he is "furious" for his employer doing exactly what he dared them to do?
I think he is a writer and just like Whitlock, remember ESPN/Disney give him access to things and audiences he wouldn't have otherwise.
Jason Whitlock is a great writer Simmons IMO step below.

He should stay. Nobody else can come close to offering him what ESPN can.
I'd argue it's the other way around with Simmons. He's one of the very few people could leave ESPN and still be relevant. He conceived of and created the only two creative, original things ESPN has done in the last two decades with Grantland and 30 For 30, and he practically pioneered the sports podcast medium. He has fantastic connections in show business and talented writers want to work with him.
If I'm Fox, I'm giving him a blank check and a fresh slate to do whatever he wants with unfettered creative control. If Whilock hadn't sold out and gone back to ESPN -- that was pathetic, by the way -- Fox could have built a monster site and podcast industry around him and Simmons.

Why do you think Whitlock sold out?
Anyone else would do the same thing.
Anyone else would do the same thing.

ESPN is the mountaintop no one else comes close especially not Fox. That's the reason Whitlock came back.
Simmons could try to do a new 30 for 30 but too bad FS1 has no viewers.

I've never heard of Bill Simmons until this year's nba playoffs on span, which are awful compared to tnt. He is not good on tv. All he does is being up old players. He better keep that 5 million a year.

Seriously?
Whitlock has been lobbing shots at ESPN, John Skipper, John Walsh, and a host of ESPN talent for years after his first stint, trashing them at every opportunity, and he walked right back to them the minute they put a check in front of him.
Taking money doesn't equate to selling out, but what Whitlock did is the epitome of sellout hypocrisy.

The hatred is so comical people think Fox NBC etc can just copy or better ESPN/Disney.
Problem is without the Disney clout all sports programming would suffer. Disney just caters to its viewers.
A vocal minority is not going to change what Disney does.

I would have thought Simmons made more than $5 million. He is a regular NBA commentator, podcast host, Grantland managing editor, columnist, 30 for 30 executive producer, etc. That is a lot of sources of income

LMFAO at this thread. All I've ever read on this board for the past year is how much of an overrated hack Bill Simmons. Now that he stuck it to ESPN, he is being labeled as some creative genius and the 'shining star' of ESPN.
I do agree with the post saying that Grantland and 30 for 30 are the two best things that have happened to ESPN in a long time. I'm a huge Simmons fan, and he should keep on walking...as long as he can bring Zack Lowe and Bill Barnwell with him.

Normal sports fans are jersey-wearing window-lickers who can't spell cat, much less write insightful op-ed pieces.

I'm not an ESPN hater by any stretch of the imagination.
I'm intimating that what Simmons wants is total creative control without the PTB at Disney and ESPN making last second edits to his columns and podcasts without his knowledge, and that Fox would be smart to offer him the same money but more unilateral control.

What he said about Goodell was correct.
He's still a douche.

Yeah, I love Simmons and support him with regard to his beef with the NFL and ESPN, but he really does have a tremendous ego, and it's one of the key reasons he's no longer on NBA Countdown. TV is just not a good medium for him.

Yeah, Whitlock is a gas bag. I don't get why people always preface their criticism of him with "he's a good writer". He's not. Whitlock only cares about his own cult of personality.
Simmons is really good at big picture ideas. I think he's well-suited to a more managerial role with only the occasional column. I do think he's a lot like Tony Kornheiser in the sense both are outsized egos who have a similar belief that this should all be fun. I think Tony K is a better writer, by far, but Tony K couldn't put together something like 30 for 30.
I think ESPN is the only place Simmons can be Simmons, Fox will not pour the same resources into him and give him the same branding opportunity. Grantland is the best thing he's ever done, and he couldn't do it at Fox. Besides, those writers will not all follow him out the door.
