re: Wouldn't an eight team playoff just shift the controversy down a few rankings?

Yes. Of course. Look at NCAA men's basketball. You have teams going 20-13 with losing conference records bitching about the "horrible injustices" of being team #69 or #70 and getting left out of March Madness.
Last year #69 was 24-9, 3rd in the SEC, and beat multiple teams that got in ahead of them.

Yes, but it would also eliminate the conference champion conundrum that we've seen. The CFP brought this on themselves when they vaulted Ohio State to #4 in 2014. You're never going to get a traditional, all-encompassing playoff system, but leaving out conference winners over at-large teams from the same conference is an issue in the long run.
You've got to balance the value of the regular season as well, but a guarantee that all P-5 champs get in would keep up the intrigue IMO. P-5 champs, highest ranked non-P-5 champ (assuming they're in the Top 16, or a similar level), and 2 at-large bids.

More importantly, imo, an 8 team playoff gives an occasional non-Power 5 team a chance to compete. It would be fun to let a team like Western Michigan have a shot at a playoff win.
This is my gripe about the entire system. It completely shuts out smaller schools from ever competing for a title. Teams like Western Michigan should have an opportunity to compete for a title via a playoff system if they have a great season.

S. Carolina was by no means #69. San Diego State, St. Bonaventure, St. Mary's, Monmouth all had beefs with the NCAA selection process and were listed by most as the last four out. Hell, Murray State went 16-0 and lost in the their conference championship and got snubbed.
Next time try and play more than just two teams in the Top 50 RPI.

It would put an end to the conference champions requirement/non-requirement and which conference to leave out
5 conference champs + 3 at large leaves a lot less controversy

Yes and no. Either way, I'll always be against an 8 team playoff as they'll never agree to higher seed home games for the first round. It screws the fans and will create a corporate atmosphere for the playoffs.

Yes but you'd get more college football games
Could actually be an argument against expanding the playoff.
More games = more need for rest time between games. Football isn't like March Madness where they can play multiple games in a week.
Which means lengthening the CFB season into late January. The NCAA wouldn't want this to conflict with basketball, and the NCAA wouldn't want their student athletes to have an even longer season

So in your world if they expand they still take a month off and start playing playoffs at January

Yeah. The students have to take finals and visit families for Christmas.
Unless they want to eliminate all the BS bowls

A 4 team playoff is a joke. What kind of a shitty tournament only has 4 teams?

Well in my 8 team playoff the conference winner would get an automatic bid

If you've played 12 regular season games plus potentially a 13th with championship weekend and you're still only ranked 8th, you don't' deserve a shot at a national title.

You can't really compare March Madness to the football playoff. All of those schools that compete in FCS on the football level are D-1 when it comes to basketball. 85 man roster vs 12 man roster. 30 games and conference tournaments vs 12 games and only winning your division to get into a conference championship game. 1 game per week vs 2-3 games per week.
If anything, they need to follow the FCS model for playoffs instead of an auto bid for winning a P5 conference. There are 13 conferences, but 10 get an auto bid. One of those is the Ivy league which doesn't participate at all in postseason games. Another is the MEAC. The other is the SWAC. Both of those play in a Bowl game in Mid-December that started last year, in lieu of participating in the playoff. So there are 24 teams, 10 auto bids, and the rest by selection.
Compare that to the P5 and G5 conferences where you eliminate 60+ schools before the season starts. At least give those teams like Boise, Western Michigan, Northern Illinois, etc a chance at winning a game or two in a playoff scenario. Make it 16 and the other 6 that didn't win their conference can gripe about it.

College Football has the best regular season in all of sports. Want to ruin it?...then expand the playoff. We're always going to complain about who gets left out but at the end of the day, it will be tough to say that the winner of the two playoff games isn't worthy of the championship.
College Football has 115 teams that have very different schedules. We're never going to have a perfect, flawless way to select a champion. Adding more games dilutes the product and makes a loss much less impactful. Let's not kill the golden goose in this quest for "fairness."

Since we're never getting rid of a playoff, I'd be ok with an 8 team playoff in which the 5 Power conference winners gets auto bids, the top ranked Group of 5 team gets an auto-bid provided that ranking is within the top 15, and no conference can have more than two participants in the playoff.
Depending how next week goes, I'd assume the hypothetical 8 team playoff this year would include:
1. Bama
2. Clemson
3. Washington
4. Penn State
5. Oklahoma
6. Ohio State
7. Western Michigan
8. West Virginia/USC/Colorado
The debate for the 8th spot would be intense. The other 7 would be clear IMO.

We did, and we just whooped Michigan and Syracuse.
In regards to last year we can't really help that teams like Memphis fell off and Clemson hasn't been the same since Purnell left. Or that the SEC as a whole sucks.

There always be complaints, but at least with 8 teams you get the power five champsions plus three at large teams

conference champs only.
enjoy the Sugar bowl if you are 11-1 and your conference champ is undefeated Alabama.
