Why is the SB so often a blowout?

If this continues, it will be the 24th time a SB has been a "blowout" i.e. not competitive for the majority of the second half at least.

Given that it is the ultimate team support, and these are supposed to be the best teams in each conference, it's very surprising to me that the game is not competitive nearly half the time.

I think one conference is generally a lot stronger than the other. The Patriots had no real competition.

The David Carr injury really fricked things up for the AFC playoffs

The 2 weeks off affects some teams more than others. Overall the NFC was tougher this year too, so the Falcons are more battle tested.

The only reason is NCAA tournament is so popular is that when you have 32 first round games, 3 or 4 are bound to be exciting.

Most blowouts came when in the 80s and 90s when the NFC routinely had 3 or 4 teams that were superior tothe best AFC.

Sure, but take the Bills for instance. The AFC was weak but those were still GREAT teams that routinely beat NFC giants in the regular season only to get crushed 3/4 times they made it.

One conference is usually much better than the other, but we don't realize it until the Super Bowl.

This, plus usually one team is ate up with their own success and lose focus. Patriots seemed like they thought they would win by default.

It certainly puts a dent into the "it's rigged" argument

Super bowls for the most part have lived up to the hype and been better games than most of the regular season games the past 10 years at least. The steelers cardinals game was great, saints was close til the pick 6, seahawks patriots came down to the wire, broncos panthers was a defensive struggle but the broncos never could pull away. We were due for a blowout

I've had the theory that the conference playoffs is about coaching while the Super Bowl is about physical talent. Whenever a team plays another team in the same conference, they're a lot more familiar with each other so coaching comes more into play. The team with better coaching who knows how to exploit the other team's weaknesses wins more often than not. In the Super Bowl, the teams don't know each other very well at all. After all, they only play once every four years. So in those matchups, any coaching advantage is often negated and the winner of the game is usually the team with more pure physical talent.
