Senna or Schumacher is my choice
Best American driver is between Foyt, Mario Andretti, or Big Al

I think Petty needed to run Indy Cars to be on the list
Another on ability to drive any car is Robby Gordon. He won in any type of racing he was in at least once.

The most purely talented racing driver I've ever seen is Juan Pablo Montoya. He's raced in F1, he's raced in IndyCar, he's raced sports cars, and he's raced at Le Mans. Never a world beater or great champion at any of them, but it takes a truly special human being with incredible raw driving talent to be able to drive all of those different types of cars competitively at the professional level. About the only thing he hasn't done is rally and I have no reason to believe he wouldn't be excellent at that too.
Fun fact: Montoya holds the record for fastest lap in the history of Formula 1. Did it in qualifying at Monza in 2004. Average lap speed of 162.95 MPH.

Richard 'the King' Petty.

Mario Andretti is one of only two drivers to win races in Formula One, Indy Car, World Sportscar Championship and NASCAR. He also won races in midget cars and sprint cars. During his illustrious career, Mario Andretti won the 1978 Formula One World Championship and four Indy Car titles.
To date, he remains the only driver ever to win the Indianapolis 500, the Daytona 500 and the Formula One World Championship, and the only driver to have won a race in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Formula One, and an Indianapolis 500. Mario Andretti remains the last American to have won a Formula One race victory—back in 1978 at the Dutch Grand Prix.
Mario Andretti is also the only person to be named United States Driver of the Year in three separate decades (1967, 1978 and 1984). He was also one of only three drivers to win races on road courses, paved ovals and dirt tracks in one season, a feat that he accomplished four different times

Has to be Mario. He has won almost all of the major world races: Le Mans, Sebring, the Indy 500, the Daytona 500. Not to mention winning an Indy and F1 championships. The only mark on his resume is never winning Monaco.

Juan fangio.
After his death, the pope said hereafter no race drivers buried in church grounds. "Race drivers are suicides".

In 2000, the Associated Press and RACER magazine named Mario Andretti Driver of the Century.
And then Italy threw all these honors on him to claim Andretti...guy was a kid when his family left Yugoslavia/Italy.
He was nurtured and learned his driving skills in the USA.
His early years were racing an old USA car - the Hudson Hornet...and they first raced for years and trained in Nazareth, Pennsylvania.
He raced midget cars all across the USA.
Then went Champ Car...USA, Indy.
