There is no doubting Tony's raw talent or his impressive accomplishments, but he's not even the best NASCAR driver of his generation.
Doesn't mean he isn't a better 'pure' driver. As I said, I uplift the guys who do it in different cars/series/disciplines.

Earnhardt, Gordon, Senna, Schumacher, Andretti, Foyt, Fangio and Bloomquist is a good starting list. Hard to compare between different forms of racing.

That was funny and Miguel Indurain did have a big engine. Only problem was it was propelling a bike.

Love The King....but he is like the Harley Race of racing....i.e. everyone know he won a lot ....but no one except really old farts saw him do it. All I ever saw him do is lose....and Kyle Petty is lucky to have his last name.

Very astute choice.

I'll go with Rapid Roy...

Rapid Roy that stock car boy
He too much too believe.
You know he always got an extra pack of cigarettes
Rolled up in his t-shirt sleeve.
He got a tattoo on his arm that say baby,
He got another one that just say hey.
But every Sunday afternoon he is a dirt track demon
In a '57 Chevrolet

And Petty won seven Daytona 500s, so he didn't suck too badly
Never said he sucked
He obviously had talent, Idc what the circumstances are you don't win 200 races being a hack. But the GOAT? Absolutely not
Not even the GOAT NASCAR driver and I'd probably trigger a good many by how many I'd put in front of him

He accomplished more, in his time, under the rules and conditions that existed, than anyone else before or since. That's all a man can do.

I really don't keep up with racing that much, but I'll say Richard Petty

ESPN classic has been showing old Indy 500 races this past week. Last night was the 1967 race featuring Parnelli Jones running the gas turbine car built by STP's Andy Granatelli. It ran away with the race lapping everyone except AJ Foyt but had a transmission failure with only 3 laps to go gifting the win to AJ who was only a few yards from being lapped himself at the time.
I was struck by the number of F1 drivers on the grid including Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart, Jochen Rindt and Denny Hulme who also won the '67 F1 championship. Lorenzo Bandini was scheduled to participate but had died in the infamous fiery crash at the Monaco GP a coupla weeks prior. There were also the quasi-F1 participants such as Mario and Gurney along with NASCAR stalwarts such as Cale Yarborough and LeeRoy Yarbrough.
Nice to have Fernando on the grid this year. Cant remember the last time an active F1 driver made the trek to Indy.
Some pics of the turbine

When you are looking for a GOAT my standards are higher than that

Jim Clark!
Very likely the correct answer.
Jim Clark was excellent in everything he raced and he absolutely dominated F1.
In F1, Clark didn't just dominate, he also beat Jackie Stewart and Sterling Moss in equal equipment.
Andretti and AJ Foyt are other drivers who won in everything they raced. Foyt had the talent to be an F1 winner, IMO, but he never got that chance.

Only reason Johnson has 7 titles is due to the stupid "Chase" format NASCAR changes every year.
If Petty or Earnhardt had the luxury of points resetting with 10 races to go, (or whatever the rules are now) they both would have over 10 NASCAR titles. Back then it was a season long endurance. Now all you have to do is win one race during the season and you are guaranteed a "Chase" spot. Doesn't matter about the rest of the season.
